Show MARY FINLEY HAS BIRTHDAY Mrs. Mary J. Finley, prominent civic and church leader of this community, ohserved her eighty-second eighty-second birthday anniversary at her home Friday. During the day, more than a hundred relatives, friends and neighbors called, including in-cluding members of the Utah county D. U. P. organization who came in a body as well as representatives repre-sentatives from the local camps and club organizations. She was presented with a lovely love-ly book from the county group and other tokens and tributes, cards and messages extending 1 felecitations for her birthday. During the afternoon, her daughters daugh-ters welcomed the callers and served light refreshments. A program pro-gram was also enjoyed during the afternoon with special tributes paid by the D. U. P. officers and camp members. Mrs. Finley was born in Cottonwood, Cotton-wood, near Salt Lake City, January Janu-ary 27, 1857,a daughter of Solomon Solo-mon D. and Lydia Ann Thorn Chase. She has spent practically her entire life here. She was one of the first school teachers in Springville, a member of the early board of education, a past president of the local Ladies' Republican club and the Springville Spring-ville Red Cross. She was for some time a member of the Utah county coun-ty board of D. U. P. and is a charter char-ter member of Camp Springville D. U. P. She is an honorary member mem-ber of the Home Culture club. She was instrumental in having a pioneer mother monument done by Cyrus E. Dallin, placed on the city park, and in preserving one of the city's oldest landmarks, a Cottonwood tree on which was placed a bronze marker. Among her literary endeavors is an account of events in the settlement set-tlement of Springville from 1850 to the present, which she hopes to complete soon. She was married to A. VV. Finley, Fin-ley, December 22, 1S7G. The couple observed their sixty-first wedding anniversary in Decem-ber 1937. Mr. Finley died January 9, 1938. She has eight sons and daughters, daugh-ters, John Finley of Olympia, Wash.; Mrs. Rena Roylance, Mrs. Lydia Palfreyman, Mrs. Eva Hanson, Han-son, Mrs. Bert Groesbeck, Mae, Bess and Arthur Finley, Springville; Spring-ville; 17 giandchildren anil it. great-grandchildren. |
