Show GET-OUT-THE-V OTE PROJECT j SPONSORED BY STUDENTS OF 1 SPR1NGVIL LE HIGH SCHOOL 9 By GEORGIA IIAKMER The Springville high school sociology so-ciology class, consisting of 55 students," stu-dents," has been very successful m sponsoring a "Get Out the Vote uroiect. This project was sponsored sponsor-ed on an absolutely non-partisan basis and was done purely for the Bocial benefit of the students of the Springville high school, as well .is for the benefit of the citizens of i springville. The class selected a committee to see that this project was carried out. The members of the committee are: Chairman, Wilfred Wil-fred Lyall, Kelsy Hill, Warren Starr and secretary Georgia Har- Six hundred placards were mimeographed mim-eographed and distributed to each student in the school. On these placards were printed the days of registration, places to register, and advice to the citizens of Springville: Spring-ville: "Vote, As You Will, But Vote." Each student was advised to take one of these placards to his ' parents and remind them that it was the duty of each citizen to vote. i A prize was offered to the class I who succeeded in getting the lar-I lar-I gest percentage of parents out to the poles on election day. This prize is to be a picture of one of the most prominent citizens of American history, such as Lincoln, Washington, Wilson, Roosevelt. This picture will be chosen by the winning class. This movement was later followed follow-ed by non-partisan rallies in which speeches were given as follows: "The Farm Problem," Leonard Whiting; "Religious Intolerance," Ray Alleman; "Prohibition As An Jssae," Mac Dougall; "Biography of Hoover," Donna Dillingham; "Biography "Bi-ography of Smith," Coreene Robertson; Rob-ertson; and "Why Citizens Should Vote," Lucille Crandall. These speeches were very carefully prepared pre-pared by each student and were given to the students of the high school in a very satisfactory manner. man-ner. Later ballots were prepared containing con-taining names of the most important import-ant candidates for election. A straw vote was then conducted for the purpose of giving the students practice in voting and for making a comparison with the results of the citizens' vote. This straw vote, proved very interesting because of; the fact that students scratched both ways, and because no ballots were thrown away due to mistakes in voting. By investigation it was round that this project has been of real practical value. This year there were 1784 citizens who registered to vote, which is 354 more than were registered at the last presidential presi-dential election, and it is hoped that 500 more took advantage of their privilege and duty and voted. The class is planning other projects pro-jects to make better citizens and to give more social benefit, and we only hope they are as successful as our "Get Out the Vote" project. |
