Our policy holders own the company and receive all the profits of the they arc their ben- company-cit- her eficiaries. Livestock Situation Ur the one band, production of meat animals is more and mors the business of the small producer, who raises live stock as a means of preamble drveralflcation and of fertilising tbs soil. It would aeem that In tbs production and feeding of live stock there Is a tendency towards getting away from tbs "mass production' In favor of the Idea of a few animals on every farm and ranch. Not so with the meat business. It would seem. Important changes are taking place fn the distribution of meats to tbs public. We have seen tbs adrent of lbs chain store system, featuring Immense buying power and often narrow margins of profit, to such an extent that many of the Independent retail meat dealers have been forced out of business. These chain meat stores have developed to so-call-ed a point where several of the larger are now doing their own slaughtering and meat packing. I'ress dispatches tell of the plea on the part of a producers' organisation In tbs Corn Beit calling upon the government for a modification of tbs "packers consent decree," permitting the national meat packers to engage la the retail meat trade. The organisation believes that the packers should be permitted to retail meals In competition with these chain store organisations which are now both slaughtering and retailing on an extensive scale. They feel that the big packers with their strong financial and efficient organisations, might well pare down the margm between what the producer receives for his livestock and what the consumer pays. No expression has come forth from the large meat packers to Indicate that they care to go Into the business of meat retallnlg, however. All of these things seem to point towards tbs gradual elimination of the small Independent meat dealer, who, with hfii limited capital, modest buying power and single locatln. Is unable to compete with a chain store with large buying power, adequate finances and volume sales. Many students of the trade are of the opinion that electric refrigeration may completely revolutionise the retail meat business, cfllng the fact that the corner drug store may now display attractive cuts of meat in an electric refrigerator. This new system of retailing meats Is already being tried out In various places. The meat cats are prepared at the packing house, and are weighed, marked and priced, and need merely to be wrapped up by the same clerk who sells the other thousand and one things In the modern drug store. Naturally, Americans are proud of the democratic way business has been conducted In this country and many will regret the fact that It is getting more difficult every day for a young man with limited capital to get into business on his own." Yet there Is a general feeling that we have too many Individual retail shops and that the difference between what the producer receives and what the customer pays is subject to Justifiable criticism. Probably there are too many retail meat shops without sufficient volume to pay their way, all trying to get by at the expense of the consuming public. If these radical economic changes in the retailing of meats will lessen that spread, no doubt both the producer and the public at large will concerns Last year, 1928, we paid back to our policy holders in dividends alone over 57 million dollars.
