The engrossed copy of the Alaskan award has been signed. The Canadian commissioners. Messrs. Aylesworth and Jette, declined to sign the award, but will submit their contrary opinions to the tribunal, so as to Bo officially on record. While they declined to sign the award they signed the maps agreed on by the majority. The award relating to the Portland canal gives the nlted States two islands, Kannaughunut and Sitklan, commanding the entrance of the Port-lanchannel and the ocean passage to Port Simpson and destroying the strategic value of Wales and Pearse islands, which are given to Canada. The mountain line adopted as the boundary lies so far from the coast as to give the United States substantially all the territory In dispute. The line completely clears all the bays and Inlets and means of access to the sea, giving the United States a complete land barrier between Canada and the sea, from the Portland canal to Mount St. Elias. Around the head of the Lynn canal the line follows the watershed, somewhat in accordance with the provisional boundary. The Canadians feel very sore over the outcome. They almost openly accuse Lord Alverstone of partisanship. When the latter presented them to King Edward at Buckingham palace, the king endeavored vainly to Induce Messrs. Jett and Aylesworth to say they were satisfied or that they accepted the situation, but the two Canadians declined to In any way express acquiescence with this view. They simply shook hands formally and bowed. One of the Canadian commissioners afterwards said to a representative of the Associated Press: This award afreets more the relations between the Dominion and the mother country than people here seem to realize and almost marks the parting of the ways; at lease so far as leaving any such question for England to decide for us." Made an Unsuccessful Attempt Blow Up Bank Building. to For two hours Monday, Newburg, Ore., was practically under control of a gang of bandits, whose object was to blow up the building of the Bank of Newburg and loot the vault of the money on deposit. Though several charges of dynamite were exploded, the steel vault failed to give way, and, tired of their attempt the bandits finally departed on horseback. Tbs vault contained probably and had the safe crackers succeeded In blowing open the vault, their booty would have been a rich one. At 3 oclock the citizens of the town were awakened by a series of muffled explosions. the vigorous ringing of the town fire bpll and occasional rifle reports. Almost to a man they turned out to see what was the cause of the disturbance. It was soon learned that robbors had taken possession of the bank, and the crowd turned Its attention In that direction. By the time the people reached the scene, however, the bandits bad succeeded In getting away. : BALTIMORE BANKS PEND BUSINESS. Most tending a of these reports om Investigation prove to be unfounded. The opinion prevails here that Russia purposes to bold all she has gained In Manchuria and refrain for the present from further advances Into Korea. Monday was a day of marked excitement and subdued anxiety In tbe financial and business circles of Baltimore, Md. Luckily a dozen reports well calculated to provoke a wholesale run on banks did not reach the great army of depositors throughout the city, thus giving ample time for conservative leaders of business to allay popular aprehenslon before it reached dangerous proportions. The day began with the announcement of the failure of tho Maryland Trust company, and except to a few the news came as a bolt out of a clear sky, spreading consternation in all directions. To these few it was known that the trust company had long been securistruggling with undigested ties." that It had sustained heavy withdrawals of deposits, and that, finally, on Saturday last. It had failed In Its efforts to negotiate a 32,000.000 loan in London. The suspension of the Union Trust company, which happened at a late hour In tho day, gave Impetus to many baseless rumors as to other financial Institutions, which might well have created a panic had they been given curreney early In the day. The total liabilities of tho two companies exceed 310,000,000. The cause of the Maryland Trust companys failure was due, as' set forth In the statement of Receiver to the Investment of the assets of the company In Mexican railway securities which could not be marketed. The Union Trust company failed because of a run on Its banking department, about 3150.000 having been withdrawn by depositors today, but the real troubles of the company had their origin In the organization of the Southwestern railway In- Virginia, in a capitalization of about was contemplated. h 1 1 ffmTWfnntniTTTiTffnnnTtTmnTTnnfftmiTmmmmmHmTMHmmnmtmTmnmii 20,-00- 0, TWO PURE Jox Uumbor Company. 3 AXD m ui Building Material.
