A Great Surprise. There are those among us who ima gine that the putting in of cement sidewalks would be so burdensome to the taxpayer that he would not be able to bear it. Let us look around and see about it. Some three weeks ago Hyrum Thomas was over from Provo he is a Spanish Fork product, and nearly everybody in town know him. The writer entered into a conversation with him about the cement sidewalks t of Provo, where sixteen miles of walk was put in about eighteen months ago, and eight more miles last fall. d Mr. Thomas owns a frontage, cement walk, which has a which cost something like $65. He was not obliged to pay for this at once, but instead the city levies a sidewalk tax of six dollars and sixty some odd cents per annum interest and principal for ten years when it is paid for in full. Now then, fellow citizens, we can no doubt have the same kind of a layout id Spanish Fork.and we do not believe a singe taxpayer when the matter is properly understood will register an objection to cement walks. We should have them from the canning factory to the depot on both sides of Main 'Street, and from Main Street to every school house and church within the corpora tion limits of this city. Each individual should keep in mind that on account of his small outlay he will have trie privilege of walking for miles in all directions with dry and clean feet. The children would not have to sit in school all day with weat feet thus your children would be more Last Saturday evening, friends, re latives and neighbors of John T. Indeed ihat often happens sev eral times a day; and it does not happen with the children alone, but the grown people as well; then after arriv ing home the shoes are placed as near the stove as possible to dry the leather thoroughly, and then, when you want to use the shoes you find that they have and are shapeless, been in fact entirely ruined. Thompkins' Daughter." It is a play of rural life, showing how an old farmer was nearly swindled out of all he possessed by a scheming banker, and brings out vividly the troubles of a country girl in the city. It is also full of excellent comedy, and if you like to ' laugh, don't miss it. The onhis citadel, without warning. slaught was so sudden and unexpected that he surrendered without any attempt at defence, and sensibly agreed to the terms of peace without protest. The occasion was the 56th anniver- versary of his birthday, and after hand shakes and many wishes for numerous happy returns of the day, the company enjoyed themselves in attending to the wants of the inner man. A short program consisting of songs, speeches, recitations, witty stories, etc. followed, concluding with selections from thegraphophone and a few games. It developed during the evening that the occasion was the 8th anniversary of the wedding of Mr.and Mrs. Thqs. Webb; the latter a daughter of Mr. Hales. At midnight it was announced that it was now the 25th anniversary of Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Holt's wedding, two of the invaders. The latter took their fellow invaders by surprise so that they were demoralized for the rest of the evening, and they soon returned to their homes after a second lunch, each vowing this to be the occasion of their lives, and hoping that Mr. Hales might have 56 more such happy days.
