Show entinel B6 • WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 24, 2010 Maple Mountain FFA students compete Maple Mountain FFA participated in a FFA area contest on Jan. 27, 2010 competing against FFA members from Salem Hills, Payson, Spanish Fork, Springville, Provo, Orem and American Leadership Academy. Two state degrees were accepted: Shane Holm and David Campbell; with one star greenhand, Kinsey Williams, moving on to the state competition. Degrees and awards are given based on the students' activity level in the FFA, their agriculture based projects and the amount of money they have earned or invested in their Supervised Agriculture Experience. SFFFA peted in speaking at the area contest: Shania Steele and Mikayla NuSink participated in creed speaking; Dillon Hales participated in the extemporaneous speaking contest; and Luke Olsen won the prepared speaking contest and will be competing at the State Convention in March, to be held in Cedar City. CAPITOL: The Future Farmers of America and floriculture classes visited the State Legislature. The purpose of going was to persuade the senators to vote in favor of keeping agriculture classes in high schools and making sure that they have sufficient funding. Students explained to senators and representatives the importance of agriculture education and FFA in public schools. The floriculture class created boutonnieres for them. It gave the students a glimpse of what a day at the state capitol is like and how much time and energy goes into it. Pictured are Chaleesa Warren and Legislator Leonard Blackham. By Chaleesa Warren. SFHS upcoming events Spanish Fork FBLA club competes at UVU Dons' Early Light Mary Anne Hillier : Stefanie Muhlestein SFHS On Feb. 12, 2010, students from Spanish Fork High School competed in the Regional FBLA Competition at UVU. Taylor Koense took third place in Help Desk. Tanner Holt took fourth place in job interview and Kaylee Beckstrom and Tressa Betts took third place in Desktop Publishing. Tressa said, "It was a lot of fun. Before the competition, Kaylee and I had to make a brochure and a flyer. At the competition, we had to take a written test and we did well enough to get third place." FBLA stands for Future Business Leaders of America. Students in the club learn what it takes to be successful in the business world. Bands prep for festivals Sarah Hewett ; SFHS ;• Spanish Fork High School's concert and jazz bands will as busy as ever this upcoming season. Concert band is preparing for festivals where they'll play "Chorus Angelorum" and "The First Suite in Eb." Their first festival will be in March at Brigham Young University, followed by a Region Concert Band that will be held at Spanish Fork High School on March 31. If the band makes it to state, they'll be playing at the State Concert Band Festival which is April 30-May 1,2010. Meanwhile the jazz band played at Thanksgiving Point for the Peaks Jazz Festival on Feb. 19. Going on into the month of March, the Jazz Band will play at the Region Jazz Festival in Payson March 3. Ending the 2009-2010 school year, both the jazz and the concert bands will play at their year-end concert on May 20,2010. Courtesy photo. HEART HEALTHY: Oakridge staff and students wore red to school on Friday, Feb. 12, £ 2010 to show their support for having a healthy heart. School Nurse Bonnie Hardy dis- j cussed the importance of reducing risk factors to keep hearts and vessels healthy. "Ev- j eryone should eat healthy foods and get lots of exercise. We can make a difference in our health and our family's health by recognizing what genetic risks we have and improving J the risk factors that we have some control of", she said.
