Dons and Golden Eagles meet in girls soccer action James Hardman STAFF WRITER The Spanish Fork Dons had their first opportunity to play Maple Mountain in soccer on Tuesday, Sept. !, 2009. As the first half of the game opened, the Golden Eagles quickly took the lead4-0, leavingtheDons behind at the start of the second half. With Baylee Nielsen and Breanna Bate keeping pressure on Don goalie Lyndsey Healey, the Eagles were able to maintain' a good''6f"fe1nse^ against the Dons. "I thought we played better than we've ever played before. This is the probably the best I've ever seen them play," said MMHS Coach Carolyn Svvenson. "This was Breanna Bate's first full varsity game, and she really stepped up to the challenge." Maple Mountain continued to attack, bringing the score to 7-0 with little time left in the second half. But the Dons couldn't let the Eagles have all On Aug. 25, 2009 the Lady Sky hawks soccer team finished preseason play with a barn-burner. Taylorsville came to town looking to repeat what they had done to the Skyhawks last season. The Lady Skyhawks were looking to redeem themselves after last year's loss and show how much they have improved. The Skyhawks started a little tentative, perhaps a little nervous about their opponent. As a result, Taylorsville notched the first goal of the match. That first goal actually broke the ice and woke up the Lady Skyhawks. Erica Egbert evened the score with a chip over the goalkeeper; Hailey Ingram assisted her. The Skyhawks then calmed down and went to work. Lindsay Stevens netted two other goals to put the Skyhawks up 3-1 at half. Taylorsville was not about to given in so eas-, ily. The Skyhawks took for granted their half-time lead and didn't start the second half with sharp defense as Taylorsville quickly scored to narrow the lead. Hailey Ingram helped recapture the two-goal lead as she took a quick free kick from the right side of the field about 30 yards out, Kallee Wilson flicked the ball forward and Lindsay Stevens was right on the far post to tap the ball home. Stevens earned her third hat trick of the season, and Hailey Ingram had three assists during the Skyhawks' 4-3 victory. "I am still stunned that Lindsay has three hat tricks on the season already. She has been playing with great. heart and her ability to finish has been phenomenal," said Coach Gillie. "And Hailey Ingram played a fantastic game today! She dominated the right sideline both defensively and offensively — she made our team better today with her play." The JV game saw just as many goals, but not in favor of the Skyhawks, with Salem losing 3-4. Mindy Stone connected with Holli Thorpe for the first goal. Then Lindsey Eberhard added the Skyhawks' second goal. Kallee Wilson knocked the third goal of the match. "Mindy had a terrific game today. She has been working really hard trying to get better each day. I was happy for Kallee — she has been a little frustrated not having more goals for her efforts. Today she got a little bit of the reward," said Gillie. of the fun. With a few minutes left, sophomore Courtney Acosta kept the game from being a shut out, scoring the Don's only goal of the game, assisted by junior Shandy Elliott. The final score was 7-1. Despite the loss, Spanish Fork Head Coach Dennis Gillie emphasized his team's strong points. "The energy on our team was really good during the first half," said Gillie. "We need to connect passes better; we could make a little improvement?' Barry Dalton / The Sentinel THIRD TIME'S THE CHARM: Lindsay Stevens earned her third hat trick of the season. ALA Coach Steve Solen said ALA's inexperience was definitely a factor in the game. "I started out this year with some girls who didn't even know the rules," he said. Solen also said the girls have all improved this year, individually and as a group, and that he knows that they could do, have done, and will do better. Despite this loss, the soccer team has won more than half of their games this season and has come together as a team. ALA next hosts Wasatch Thursday, Sept. 10 at 4 p.m. Payson, coached by a Spanish Fork native, Andrew Wright, beat the Lady Dons 4—1 Thursday, Sept. 3. "This'was a good region win, and perhaps the biggest region win [point spread] in several years for Payson," Wright said. The Lions fielded a team with a good mix of seniors and juniors with a freshman goalie. They played well in each position. "Payson is our closest rival and we should have matched up really well with them," said SF Coach Dennis Gillie. "This loss was disappointing and should have been much closer. We need,to work on connecting more passes and playing kick-and-run." The Lady Dons played without three of their key contributors. Goal Keeper Lyndsey Healey and midfielders Annie Darling and Kaylee Beckstrom were out with injuries. The JV game ended in a tie 0-0. The Dons had several chances to score, but the ball seemed to go right to the Payson goalie. Payson controlled the tempo of the game and maintained control of the ball throughout most of the game. Spanish Fork found themselves playing on the defensive side of the field most of the game. The Dons goal keeper, Kylee Wolf, saved the game several times with diving saves and several blocked shots. The Dons will be back next week and ready to play Salem. Hills on Sept. 10. |
