Show SPANISH FORK Covering what matters most A8 • WEDNESDAY, JULY 22, 2009 Salem City Council House fire Amy Connelly STAFF WRITER Salem held a regular city council meeting on Wednesday, July 15. Previous to the meeting, a work session was held in order to have a Hare Krishna parking discussion. The regular council meeting started with a visit from the Santaquin Royalty. They shared information on Orchard Days, which starts on July 25. They then gave each member of the council a booklet filled with information on the upcoming festivities and a caramel apple. A public hearing was held to finalize the Soren and Dar Christensen Annexation. The room was opened for discussion, and several concerns were voiced over some water and sewer lines in the area. After addressing all concerns, the council closed the public hearing. The annexation was requested to become a part of the R-2 zoning in Salem, and it is a single family home with a garage. The council approved the annexation by a unanimous vote. Ransom Love, a citizen of Woodland Hills, then approached the council to remove the lien-in-lieu for street improvements outside of his home. Love had recently sold some of his property and wanted to resolve this issue before leaving. The issue with the road is that it needed to be widened from 56 feet to 66 feet, adding five feet to each side. This needs to be done in order to bring the road up to code. Love had gotten several bids from contractors as to the cost and presented all of this information to the council. Mayor Henderson said, "I have been studying this problem for two weeks ... it seems to be agrey area, so we should use a little common sense in my estimation." The mayor also voiced some concerns about taking care of the drainage on the road. "I have gone down there and seen it myself, and I noticed that there could be issues with drainage on that road," he said. The council voted to remove the lien-in-lieu on the property, so long as the drainage on the street would be addressed by the residents within the area. Three heat tape bids were brought to the council for the city office roof. It was noticed during the last winter that the accumulation of ice on the North side of the roof had become a problem. The council unanimously accepted the Reliable Electric bid on heat tape, and the issue will be resolved before it snows again in Salem. The council approved the minutes of the July 1 meeting, and they approved the bills for payment. Brad James, the chief of police, requested that the council approve the purchase of a new police vehicle. The proposal was to replace Sergeant Dibble's 2003 Dodge Durango with a 2009 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 police package truck. The new truck will cost $28,930.60. The council approved the purchase, with the intent to roll over the old vehicle for Salem city office use. Currently the office does not have a vehicle that can be used for city business. Henderson said, "It will be nice to have a vehicle that the council can use for any city business." In the open discussion, Susan Taylor addressed the council. She was there representing the Spanish Fork/ Salem Chamber of Commerce. She showed the stickers that the council is giving to all chamber members for use in their store fronts to show their membership, and she also discussed the chamber's monthly mixers. The last mixer was held at Magleby's in Spanish Fork. "You must be a cham-, ber member in order to host a mixer," Taylor said. "The idea is that hosting a mixer is one of the perks of being a member." During the council reports , Mayor Henderson announced the candidates for the Salem city mayor and city council. Jon Cope and Stanley W. Green are the candidates for the mayor seat. Brent Black, Sidney M. Jorgensen, Brent V. Hanks, Charles Wixom, David P. Grant and Sterling M. Rees are the candidates for the two council seats. Councilman Ficklin also addressed the need for the Credit Union and the grocery store.
