I want people to know how music can help them beyond their listening to music for enjoyment," said Rebecca Tanner, a Spanish Fork native and secondyear Music Therapy Major at Utah State University. On Wednesday, Feb. 18, Rebecca shared some research and her musical talents with over 150 fourth and sixth graders at Canyon Elementary School. She said, "The purpose of this program is to help children as well as adults realize the powerful influence that music can have in their lives. With over 158 million people owning ipods and MP3 players, people are spending a significant amount of time listening to music. The research shows that teenagers ages 12-17 are spending between 2 to 4 hours a day listening to music. Technology has made it possible to assemble huge musical libraries comprised of thousands of songs that are available at the touch of a finger. Cell phones, ipods, and MP3 players have made music libraries portable and available 24/7." In her presentation, Tanner shared research supporting the claims that playing a musical instrument and listening to the right kinds of music actually helps make children and teenagers smarter as their brain activity increases. As a music therapy major, Rebecca has also seen how much music can help in the healing process. Music is frequently used in working with children who have special needs and children suffering from acute and chronic illnesses. One of Rebecca's friends who is also a music therapy major is currently completing an internship at Primary Children's Hospital in Salt Lake City. At the end of her presentation, Rebecca involved the school children in singing songs designed to build their self-esteem. She also played the guitar and a couple of classical pieces on the piano. "There is a lot of degrading and vulgar music that youth are exposed to nowadays. I want to help them see the power that music has to heal hearts, strengthen souls, and enrich lives," says Tanner. Rebecca has selected the Power of Music as her platform for the Miss Spanish Fork Pageant which occurs on March 14,2009.
