Show -NEWS- Spanish Fork Covering what matters most WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 04, 2009 • A9 Dons fall to Knights Lady Dons' hopes Chad Vest for playoffs slip STAFF WRITER Spanish Fork entertained arguably the best team in the state when they took on the two time defending 5A state champion Lone Peak Knights last Friday night in the Don Dome. If you want to be the best, well, you have to beat the best and the Knights hoops program ranks with the best of them in all of sports in the beehive state. Lone Peak brought their prized recruit in BYU bound Tyler Haws and throughout the night, the rest of the team rallied around their star player, Breck Lewis scored the first deuce and gave SF its only lead at 2-0. Early on, the red and gray appeared to confuse the opposition with an "in your face" game plan on Haws and company. However, an athletic Knight team began to find their groove and the Dons went on a scoring drought missing multiple open looks that lasted nearly a full quarter. The result was a 21-2 scoring drought to end the first. From there, Lone Peak altered shots with their size advantage and good defense which also featured another BYU bound player in 6'10" Nate Austin. SF forced Haws and Company to shoot from the outside and it started to get ugly. The Knights dropped trey-balls like they were in a war zone racking up 33 points total from the long ball. Spanish displayed hustle and good effort but it seemed that Lone Peak could compete with every junior college program in the land. Hie.. Dons kept fighting butfelLby the score of 82-^4. Lewis scored all of the Dons four points in the quarter. Their inability to knock down shots was the key to the Knights big run. SF trailed 2\-A heading into the second. Haws connected on his third trey of the night to begin the second but an athletic Travis Still countered with a strong drive for a deuce and one. But the scoring margin increased for the talented visiting squad and SF found itself down 45-15 to end the half. Still nailed another nifty shot as he fooled a big man underneath with a reverse lay-up on a baseline drive. But Lone Peak continued to connect from downtown and its big men grabbed many boards for some second chance shots. The Dons scoring woes continued, and after three, the Knights were up 7 1 26 which is when Coach Quincy Lewis inserted his subs into the game. A fine play was witnessed at the final buzzer when sophomore Dons player Nelson Rodriguez hit a contested lay-up to end the game. Haws led all scorers with 24 in only three frames played. For the Dons', two players were in double figure_s,..Still finished withal3 and Lewis ended with 12. Both Gavin Hales and Taylor Jones finished with two treys a piece. Hope abounded this week as the Lady Dons prepared for two big region contest. Win and the Dons stayed in the hunt for the third region playoff birth, lose and securing the third and final spot would be difficult. On Wednesday the Lady Dons visited the PG Vikings. SF established their inside game with Redd blocking 3 shots and Nielsen racking up 3 offensive rebounds, Elliot nailed a late 3. PG went to 6*6 Hamson early and enjoyed a 13-11 advantage ending the first quarter. Brynlie Nielsen dominated for the Dons in the second quarter with 5 rebounds, 5 points and 1 block. The Lady Dons scored 11 points while holding PG to 10. The Vikings enjoyed a 23-22 halftime lead. The Dons defense stifled the Vikings offense in the third quarter. Nielsen and Redd double teamed and dominated the paint. Katelyn Elliott drained two-three point baskets. The Lady Dons scored 15 while holding the Vikings to 8 third quarter points. SF took a 37-31 lead into the fourth quarter. SF played tough defense. The Dons pounded the ball into the post getting three Vikings in foul trouble. The Lady Dons had 33 rebounds, 9 assist, 4 steals, and 7 blocked shots. On Friday the Lady Dons dug an early first quarter hole, Lone Peak led 15-6 after the first quarter. SF struggled to adjust to the 3-2 zone scoring only 6 points in the second period and LP added to their lead at halftime, 25-12. The Lady Dons scored 21 second half points holding the Knights to 17. The Dons second half defense frustrated LP. Spanish Fork would dominate the paint with 4 blocks and inside scoring early in the third quarter before struggling late offensively in the fourth as Lone Peak survived with a 42-33 victory. Redd led SF with 10, Johnson 8, Elliott 6, Nielsen 6, and Huntsman 2. The Lady Dons had 26 rebounds, 11 steals, 6 blocks, and 6 assist. The Lady Dons visit Lehi Friday Feb. 6.
