Show -NEWS- Spanish Fork Coveting what matters most WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 15, 2008 • B7 Spirit Week at SF Jr. High Chris Thompson and Kaye Brockbank ; SFJH The students and faculty at Spanish Fork Junior High enjoyed a memorable Spirit Week that included five days of dress up, lunch time activities, games, prizes, and a rockin' end-of-week assembly. The Student Council generated the ideas for each day's activities and enjoyed seeing their plans carried out as teachers, students and staff showed their school spirit by dressing crazy and getting involved in the activities. Students took advantage of the opportunity to come to school in PJs, while teachers enjoyed coming to school in their favorite retro digs. It was even reported that Willie Nelson and Madonna made guest appearances in the faculty room during lunch. On Friday, the student council led the school in an assembly that included a mile run, spirit chants, relay races, and a tug-ofwar contest between the football team and the faculty. During the Friday assembly the newly elected seventh-grade student council members were also announced. Congratulations to Steven Russell, Paizlee Dansie, and Brady Bate, the new seventh-grade leaders! A big thanks to Kris Holley, the great administrators, and the stupendous student leaders for making Spirit Week such a hit. Go, Lobos! They meet monthly at a pre-arranged restaurant and enjoy the fun night out as colleagues, laughing and sporting their red, purple, and pink! Laura Carter SFJH On Monday, Sept. 29, 2008 the seventh grade Utah Studies students from Spanish Fork Junior High School traveled to Ante- lope Island for a field trip. Jesse Roberts and James Hubbard prepared brine shrimp collection kits and observation books for students to gather information as they went to four different activities around the island. The students had a great time collecting brine shrimp and wading into the Great Salt Lake, hiking and climbing rocky points, and seeing one of our state's greatest natural wonders. This past week, they held their first ever 'Reduation Ceremony.* Keri Huntsman, upon turning 50 this past month, traded in her pink hat for the prestigious red one that she will proudly wear from now on. No longer is 50 a birthday to dread, but cause for a celebration instead! Keri recited several promises as an official 'red hatter,' one of which was promising to read the menu aloud for any red hat member who's forgotten her bifocals! Congratulations to Keri for this prestigious accomplishment and the Krazy for K Red Hat Klub welcomes other K teachers to join them in the future. Many activities were held to promote a healthy and drug-free lifestyle. Each day had a different theme to show support against drugs. Some of the themes were "Play Hard, Play Clean, Life a Drug Free Life", and "Band Against Drugs". Red Ribbon Week is a chance to be visible and vocal in our desire for a drug-free community. To help relay this message to students an assembly was held with a special guest speaker, Officer Greg Sherwood, an officer from the Spanish Fork Police Department and also the father of Braxton Sherwood. Braxton is in Mrs. Thomas' kindergarten class. Officer Sherwood told the students how important it is to be sure of what they are putting into their bodies and only put things that are healthy. The Utah Waters Van is an educational outreach program about Utah's water cycle and is offered by The Living Planet Aquarium to fourth-grade students throughout Utah. Fourth-grade students were allowed, through the use of models, to see and better understand Utah's water cycle and how Utah uses its water. Students learned about water conservation, importance of wetlands and about some of Utah's native wetland plants and animals. It was a very educational program.
