Show ^ cho A10 • WEDNESDAY, JULY 16, 2008 Covering what matters most $8 million bond to finish Liberty Academy registration Maple Mountain High Lindsay B. Wolsey STAFF WRITER July School Board meeting, Assistant Superintendent Rick Nielson passed Agenda items flew by Wednesday at the July 9,2008 meeting of the Nebo School District School Board. Business Administrator Tracy Olsen started the meeting off by talking about the last installment of the bond issued in February 2004. The state legislature has declared that each time bond money is released a public hearing needs to be held. No one in attendance objected to the issuance of the remaining $8 million bond. The bond money is intended to complete the construction of Maple Mountain High School. The District's financial advisor at Wells Fargo, Dale Overland, was in attendance to make sure everything proceeded correctly. The sale of the bonds will take place on August 13, 2008 and the board will vote to approve the sale that night at the August School Board Meeting. "When the School Board made the decision to shorten the length of time on debt it saved the taxpayers a lot of money," Overland said. "This bond is being sold for a shorter length of time than the other bonds, since it's smaller." The majority of the meeting was spent reviewing the School Improvement Plans and Trustland Funds. At the "In order to get this money, schools need to submit detailed plans on how they intend to spend the money." - Rick Nielson out three inch binders to the members of the School Board in order for them to be able to read up on the School Improvement Plans before the next meeti ng. School Board Member Debbie Swenson was the first to speak up with concerns. One concern was the ratio of staff to parents on the community councils. Swenson said, "Some lists of members could list more clearly who is staff and who is a parent." Swenson plans to email the majority of her concerns, as well as compliments, to Nielson. "Cherry Creek Elementary has so many goals listed — maybe it's too much," Swenson commented. Nielson was coerced by Board President Dean Rowley to explain what the Trustlands money is, to the benefit of the Boy Scout Troop in attendance. "Trustland money is money generated at the state level from pockets of land. There are little parcels of land all over the state that were dedicated over 100 years ago. If there's ever any money that comes from selling the Trustlands, finding oil, or turning it into a national park, all that money goes into an account. That money is invested and the state gives the interest to the schools," Nielson explained. "In order to get this money, schools need to submit detailed plans on how they intend to spend the money." Rowley said,"The plans were much better and easier to read this year." After stowing their giant binders, the School Board moved into the next part of the meeting, which included Tracy Olson swearing in Superintendent Chris Sorenson for another two-year term as Superintendent. "Every two years we have a chance to fire the Superintendent if we really want to," joked Swenson. "But I want to say we have the best Superintendent in the State of Utah. He cares about the students, the employees, he does great things for Nebo School District, he works long hours, and we really do care about him."
