Show r -N E W S- Spanish Fork B6 • WEDNESDAY, JULY 2, 2008 Covering what matters most Sleepless: Making a Name: From TRACK • B l had similar thoughts. "I am kind of curious," he said. "I enjoyed what I did but it does make me wonder because it would' ve been fun." During training, Hughes ran by his lonesome with a stopwatch. "I knew I could run faster than 12 seconds," he said. "But being in a race with some quick guys helped my time be quicker." He went on to say, "Sprinting is all about those quick twitch muscles. It's kind of an explosion. Hitting the gym and working my legs out besides training made a big difference." Two of the most dominating track athletes from SF or to ever compete in Utah are Natalie and Nachelle Stewart. Both of them are famous and need little introduction. Their names, if not already printed, may be in the UHSAA record books for a long time. Nat- alie won three state medals in the 100m, 200m and the 400m races. In fact, she set two new state records in both the 400m and the 200m. She even tied the record in the 100m. Her twin sister Nachelle is cut from the same mold and has oodles of talent. She competed in several events but excelled in the 800m to become a state champ setting a new record in that very event. Recently, both sisters were invited to the Nike Outdoor Nationals which is held each year in Greensboro, N.C. In order to qualify for this event, a track athlete must register a certain time to be invited. The meet director then offers $1,000 for each selected athlete to experience a once in a lifetime opportunity. Nachelle finished the race with a personal best time of 2:08:01 which surpassed her state record by nearly half of a second. She had many reasons to be nervous, especially when squaring off against the best talent in the nation. "I visualized my race for two weeks right before bed," said Nachelle. "That kind of calmed me since this race was so big. I was nervous but it was just awesome to run against that kind of competition and have that push." Both sisters have competed in different parts of the US but never before had they run with the best from all 52 states. For her efforts and performance, Nachelle was named an Ail-American since the top six placers receive an AllAmerican certificate. "I never thought that I would be one," she said. "It's such an awesome feeling. The dedication and hard work has paid off. It was an awesome way to end my high school career." Natalie also received an All-American award for her performance in the 400 meter race. She also set a personal best record by running a blazing 53:07 seconds to place second in the meet. Her time was also second-fastest in the nation this year. Before her senior year, Natalie suffered through pains from a few nagging injuries. Fortunately for her, she remained healthy all throughout this past season which allowed her to be so successful. "I was able to run my heart out in practice," she said. "I didn't have any state records before this year and I just wanted to go out with a bang." She mentioned what she enjoys most about track and field. "Actually, I like the running of the race and the competing nature of it. It's fun being able to feel your speed and pulling ahead. I love competing. I love it." Both track phenoms from Spanish Fork will be on scholarship at BYU in the fall. From SOFTBALL • B l The brainchild of Marziale and Dansie, the tournament attracted nine hardy, sleep-deprived teams to compete for t-shirts, sandwiches and the glory of being the first to win the Friday Night Lights Tournament. The teams were divided into two pools, with the top two teams from each pool advancing to three rounds of single-elimination tournament play. The championship game, which started shortly after 4 a.m., featured Team Haveron and the Pound Club. Three sleepy fans were in the stands, along with the indefatigable concessions crew, who had closed up shop but stayed to see the final game. Team Haveron took an early lead with a three-run home run in the first. The Pound Club scored multiple runs in the second and fifth innings, but Haveron maintained their lead, winning 12-5 at the end of seven. Dansie said he felt like the tournament was a success. He said the number of teams they had sign up was more than expected, given that this was the first time doing the tournament. "For the first year the number of teams surprised us," he said. The players responded well to the tournament and the overnight format. "They liked to play at night with cooler temperatures," said Dansie. He explained that during the summer it's hard to play an all-day tournament because of high temperatures. Dansie said the players also appreciated the concessions, which were available throughout the night. "They had breakfast burritos at 3 a.m.," he said. Plans are already in the works for next year's tournament. "We're going to do it again next year," Dansie said. "We'll probably do it annually from here on out."
