Prescription bus comes to town On February 17, 2009 television as we have known it will change. That's the deadline when all television stations will only be broadcasting a digital signal. To help Spanish Fork Citizens understand the change, KBYU-TV held a meeting at the Spanish Fork City Library on Thursday, June 26 to answer any questions local residents had. Although only four citizens attended the meeting, many others were able to view it when it was broadcast on Channel 17. "If you subscribe to Spanish Fork Cable or another cable or satellite service, you don't need to do anything," KBYU Station Manager Diena Simmons said. "They'll convert the signal for you." Several of the residents in attendance were concerned that they might have to pay extra for digital television. Simmons was quick to assure them they don't. "There will still be free channels over the air. You don't have to subscribe to cable or satellite television. You will either need a converter box or a television that will accept the digital signal." Simmons explained. KBYU has been holding meetings in local communities trying to get the word out about the digital switch. They will actually be broadcasting five different channels, all of which will be available over the free digital airwaves. Simmons asked that the people who attended the meeting discuss the switch with their friends and family. "A lot of people don't understand technology, and they might not be sure of what they need to do in order to continue watching television," Simmons said. "Utah has the highest rate of people who watch free television: We want to make sure that everyone is informed." Across the nation, about ten percent of households are unprepared for the switch to digital signal. In Utah, 23 percent of households are unprepared. According to Laura' Sheffield of KBYU, Salt Lake City is the second highest unprepared city in the nation. "Milwaukee is number one, with 18.3 percent of households unprepared. Salt Lake has 18 percent unprepared." Part of the meeting was used to explain that digital television is different from High Definition Television. "HDTV has a sharper picture, and it usually costs extra from your provider. You don't need to upgrade to HDTV just because the analog signal is ending," Simmons explained. Many broadcasters are currently broadcasting both analog and digital signals. On February 17, 2009, the analog signals will no longer be transmitted. Televisions will still work for videos or DVDs, but the only way to continue receiving television signal will be to either buy a TV with a digital tuner, buy a converter box, or connect to a cable or satellite service. "For most people, the converter box is the best choice," Simmons said. Discounted $40 coupons to help with the purchase of a converter box are available from the government. There is a limit of two per household, and over one third of the coupons available have already been claimed.
