Show -N E W S- Covering what matters most Spanish Fork WEDNESDAY, MARCH 26, 2008 • B7 Canyon Courtesy photos ANY SURVIVORS?: The Easter Bunny made a special visit to Mrs. Ericksen's kindergarten class at the annual egg drop at Canyon Elementary. He wanted to see if there were any surviving eggs he could hard boil and hide on Easter. DROP, DON'T EAT: Kindergarten students at Canyon Elementary watch as custodian Larry Hathaway drops their eggs off the roof of the gymnasium. The annual egg drop is part of a science unit. Each student packages a raw egg in such a way that it can survive the fall. After the drop, the students make a graph comparing the eggs that survived and those that did not. They also discuss why some eggs survived and others did not. Canyon Elementary places at Utah State Chess Tournament Ryan Cromer CANYON PR March 15, 2008, was the Utah State Elementary Chess Tournament held at the University of Utah. Canyon was able to have seventeen students go and represent the school this year at the tournament. Out of 86 schools represented there. Canyon Elementary took fourteenth place as a team. In the grade, categories Canyon student^ won the following: In Kindergarten, Jacob Bolen won second place. In third grade, Brandon Webb won fifteenth place. In fourth grade, Jacob Warnock and Landon Shumway both placed high enough to win trophies for "Outstanding." Other students attending the tournament from Canyon who helped win the team trophy were Keaton Adamson,Mason Johnson, EJ.Pohahau, Devin King, James Chesire, Michael Graham, Porter Graham, Katelynn Bolen, Eli Williams, Brandon Baum, Billy Schaefermeyer. FOURTEEMTH IN STATE: Students and leaders from Canyon Elementary pose with their trophy. Canyon placed fourteenth in elementary schools from Utah. OUTSTANDING: Canyon fourthgraders Landon Shumway and Jacob Warnock pose with their chess trophies for "Outstanding."
