My aunt passed away and we went to her funeral in Mesa, Arizona. Before we left we stocked the car with healthy snack foods (and unhealthy ones too) and lots of bottled water. My husband checked all of the fluids in the van and he said that we needed some window wash and a quart of oil and so I went to the store to pick some up. Since we hadn't had the van for too long, I thought that I would pick up some new wiper blades too. Fortunately I was taught to keep the old ones as spares. For the most part, our 10-hour drive was a pretty comfortable, uneventful trip, except for the part when the woman talking on her cell phone ran a, not yellow-red light, but a red-red light and just about changed the course of events. But after my husband and son screamed for me to stop, I slammed on the brakes just in time. I found that adrenaline stays in your system for quite some time. Our trip back was a little more exciting. It started to rain, but I was feeling pretty cocky and I mentioned to my family how happy I was that I had gotten the new wiper blades. And then I turned them on. The passenger side window was fantastic — not a streak anywhere! There wasn't a streak on the driver's side either, but that was because it didn't actually touch the window at all! Two inches at the top and two inches at the bottom, but nothing in between. I'm not one to panic quickly, and it wasn't really raining that hard, after all I could technically see my parent's car in front of me. I thought that at the next gas station we would pull over and fix it. That is when the hard rain hit. I was hunching low in the seat so that I could peer out of the two-inch bottom - and then it happened, the windshield wiper blade and arm flew off of the windshield and was perched next to my driver's side door. I was driving blind, in Arizona, on a scenic route, where they have soft shoulders. Aaggghhhh! Fortunately we had a cell phone and we called my parents, who we were following, and asked them to find a safe place to pull over - immediately. I could just barely see them through the rain and so we were able to get off of the road safely and change the wiper blades. My point is - be prepared and have spare parts for your car, whether you are traveling or not. I was surprised how many cars I saw on the side of the road with people who had broken fan belts, flat tires (without a spare) and overheated engines. It doesn't cost a lot to keep a first-aid kit, weather appropriate clothing, a spare fan belt, an extra quart of oil, windshield wash, wiper blades, a spare gallon of water or two (to drink or use in the radiator) and a set of tools. It might help you with a problem that could be minor, but then again it might just save you a lot of pain and heartache from something far more serious. It would also be a good idea to try your windshield wipers out before you actually need them. Sickness: From SHIRLENE • A2 when love and caring soothed away worries and sickness. The Class of 450 has been saddened this past week with the passing of Genevieve Larsen. I don't know when she started teaching at Spanish Fork High School, but she is in my 1948 yearbook as a member of the faculty and that was the year I was a sophomore. She was our type and shorthand teacher and well respected by all. According to the obituary, she and Glen were married shortly after our graduation in 1950. When we celebrated the 50th anniversary of our graduation in 2000, we invited our teachers to attend and. she and Glen came along with Thane and Lola Stone. Our other teacher, Gus Black was not able to come. Then in 2005 on our 55th anniversary, Glen and Genevieve came again and Gus came. Thane could not attend because of health reasons and died that December. So now, Gus is the last living teacher of the class of '50. Our sympathy to Glen and his family. Please know that she influenced many students. Later, when our * children were in high school, she was the school counselor and so she has touched many lives. We appreciate her caring concern for the students in our area. Rebecca Tanner, daughter of Mark and Carol Tanner of Spanish Fork, was awarded the 2008 "Outstanding Has Been" Award at the Utah Junior Miss Scholarship Pageant held at Juan Diego High School in Salt Lake City on March 15 and 16,2008. The "Outstanding Has Been" Award is given to a Junior Miss participant from the previous year who exhibits significant continued involvement with the Junior Miss Program. Rebecca received a scholarship in the amount of $250, funded by the Utah's Junior Miss Council, whose members are all former Junior Miss participants affectionately known as "Has Beens." While preparing for the state competition in 2007, Rebecca presented the "Be Your Best Self Program and shared her piano talent with civic groups, abused and neglected children staying at the The Christmas Box House and hundreds of local elementary schoolaged children. Rebecca Tanner Rebecca recruited new contestants and sponsors for the program and served as a motivational speaker for her local Junior Miss Workshop. She also participated in mock interviews and provided feedback to the girls. Rebecca is currently attending Utah State University on a full scholarship and she continues to remain involved in building the local Junior Miss program as a recruiter and helping with the 2008 production taking place in June. Congratulations, Rebecca! Shopping at the Ultimate Store One valuable way to look at our life is to view living as a shopping spree to the ultimate store.
