This year both teams sent out their ace pitchers. For Springville it was Kurt Averett, for the Dons it was Brock Duke. No wonder the score ended 2-0. Duke was sensational in his six innings of work. Radar guns'showed him hitting 91 mph, with a sharp breaking curveball in the 80s. Duke struck out eight and allowed only four hits. His only jam came in the fourth when Springville had a runner on second with no outs. Duke got the next man to ground out then struck out the next two to end the inning. Great defensive plays from shortstop T^ler Hanks and second baseman Trevor Randolph also proved valuable in this close game. Selby Brurnmett came in for the final inning and shut the Red Devils down quickly. Brummett got a ground ball and two strikeouts to end the game. The two runs the Dons got came in the fifth inning. Michael Hayes had drawn a walk and Selby Brummett had hit a single. Junior Taggart Lunceford then drilled a ball to right field that was caught; however, alert base running on Hayes' part drew a throw to third after he bluffed that he was tagging. The throw went wild which allowed Hayes to score. Brummett then scored on an RBI hit from Trevor Randolph. The two runs proved to be enough for the Dons to claim their fourth Sunshine Tournament title in a row. Senior Aly Tingey added a triple and an RBI as the Dons pushed the lead to 13-2 in the fifth inning and cruised to a 14—7 victory. Friday morning the Dons opened up tournament play against Pine View High School. Garni Robi nson worked six innings, giving up six hits and three runs. Robinson struck out six while picking up her second win of the season. Offensively, senior Ashley Chappel scored twice and went 2 for 3 at the plate. The Dons broke open a 4-2 game in the top of the sixth scoring five runs on five hits for a 9-3 victory. The Lady Dons second tournament game matched them against the Cougars of Union High School. Deven Baum picked up her third win of the season working five innings while giving up only two runs. Sophomore Dezlee Roberts found herself starting at third for senior Whitney Holm, who missed both the Pine View and Union games due to a strained muscle. Roberts, along with Lindsee Thurgood, picked up two hits and two RBIs each in three plate appearances as the Dons picked up their second tournament victory 8-2. Spanish Fork's final game on Friday was a 15-run demolition of South Scvicr High School. The Dons' star of the game was sophomore Dezlee Roberts. Coach Andrews gave Roberts her first varsity start after outstanding performances in her JV appearances. In her first varsity appearance Roberts did not disappoint, throwing a nohitter. The game was called after three innings due to the fifteen rule mercy rule, however in her three innings Roberts faced nine batters, striking out six. Pitching was only have of Roberts performance, at the plate she went 3-3, with five RBIs including a three run home run and a two run double. everything in your hometown/ and will be here for service when you need it. I am dedicated to winningyou back to your hometown dealership that is so far ahead of all the others Saturday morning the Bountiful Braves proved to be the Dons' toughest competition for the entire tournament. The tournament games were limited to one hour and fifteen minutes. It appeared that the Braves* plan was to shorten the game, limiting the plate appearances for the high-powered Spanish Fork bats. The Braves shortened the game taking their time between outs and innings. The Dons made it through their line up one time, sending only 15 Spanish Fork batters to the plate for the entire game. The Dons, however, took full advantage of the limited number of plate appearances. Leah Adamson and Whitney Holm launched back-to-back solo home runs in the bottom of the second and Katelyn Elliot added a three-run home run in the bottom of the third. Cami Robinson pitched four innings, striking out five, including striking out the side in the bottom of the fourth to preserve the 5-2 victory. The Lady Dons met the Templars of Manti High School in the championship game Saturday afternoon. Senior Ashley Chappel got Spanish Fork started in the top of the first inning. The Dons second batter in the line up sent the second pitch over the right field fence for an early 1-0 lead. Spanish Fork put the game away in the top of the third scoring ten runs on eight hits, including a solo home run by Tina Ferguson and two RBI doubles by juniors Katelyn Elliott and Kylie Brinkerhoff. An inning later Chappel and Brinkerhoff doubled again as Spanish Fork pushed their lead to 14—2. Dcvcn Baum moved to 4-0 on the season, pitching five innings allowing five runs on three hits, while Robinson pitched the last two innings in relief. The Spanish Fork bats have been impressive to start the season. The Lady Dons boast a team batting average of over .400 with seven home runs to go along with the 67 runs scored. The six wins in St. George move the Dons record to 8-0 on the season with upcoming road games against Box Elder andTimpview. when it comes to service after the sale. His integrity has always been beyond reproach I have been in business for about 40 years, and in that time have done business with Barber Brothers. First when they were in south Spanish Fork on the east side of the road, then they moved to the west side of the road in the old Gridley Chevrolet building, then to the new location on the north end of Spanish Fork. I have purchased over 30 autos and trucks from Barber Brothers, and have always been treated like I was the most important person in the store. When I needed service on any of the vehicles, they were prompt and efficient. I recommend Barber Brothers to everyone I know. — Sid Paskett, owner ACE Rents, Inc.
