Show N\ w s Spanish Fork Covering what matters most WEDNESDAY, MARCH 19, 2008 • B7 ALA presents premiere of 'Willy Wonka' Ashley Walton STAFF WRITER This week American Leadership Academy put on a production of "Willy Wonka." It was the premiere of the play in Utah, since it was hot off the press. This was an elaborate production, complete with hundreds of Oompa Loompas and ornate set designs. Children and adults alike enjoyed this performance with its witty dialogue, vibrant costumes and catchy musical numbers. The role of Charlie was played by 12-year-old Patch Crowe, and not only did this boy look like spitting image of Charlie, he had a solid, clear voice that hit every note and he eased into his dance steps as if it were the most natural thing in the world. . To prepare for his role, Crowe said, "We watched the movie a lot and I just pictured what I thought Charlie would act like." He said his favorite part of the production was when he got to fly in Willy Wonka's factory. Senior Nathanel Sackett portrayed the whimsical Willy Wonka with hilarious facial expressions and exquisite comedic timing. Sackett said he was pleased with the way the play came together. ' i t was really cool how it was put up so quickly," he said. "We put it up in three weeks, which is way less than a normal musical, but I think we really pulled it off." Before the play, audience members were encouraged to participate in a Willy Wonka carnival, where there was food, games, contests and, of course, Wonka bars. This production went all-out and it was a real treat for the community. SFJHArt ENGAGING STUDENTS IN ART: David Millman, Spanish Fork Jr. High art teacher, has his students creating some very interesting artwork! Recently, Assistant Principal Scott Carson walked into the art supply room to find body parts strewn about like a gruesome scene from some teenage horror film. There were arms, legs, heads and torsos waiting to be reconstructed into life-size figures of various characters — Superman, Jack Sparrow and the Headless Horseman. Students start by wrapping each other in clear packing tape. They then cut away the forms and reconstruct them into the life size sculptures. It is a fascinating process and the students have a lot fun doing it.
