Both teams finished last season as a state runner-up and entered the season ranked third in their respective divisions. Springville entered the game with a 3-3 record and had five additional games under their belt following a trip to Southern Utah last week. Spanish Fork's only outing this year was a decisive 16-1 win over Mountain View. Despite being a nonregion match, anytime these two teams get together the intensity is at a high level. Many of the girls have played with or against each other for four to five years. They know each other well and are equally matched in all aspects of the game as the statistics showed. The games' stats were a mirror image of each other, except for the score, as both teams had nine hits and left seven on base. Opposing pitchers, Cami Robinson (SF) and Sarah Clark (SP) both gave up two walks. Clark struck out six, while Robinson had five strikeouts of her own. Defensively the teams were also equally matched as they each committed three errors. Springville jumped out early in the top of thefirston a home run by Nikki Brailsford with one runner on base. The Dons cut the lead in half in the bottom of the first on a RBI single by Katelyn Elliott that scored Tina Ferguson. The Red Devils went down in order in the top of the second, including two Robinson strike outs. Following a walk by Lea Adamson, single by Aly Tingey and sacrifice bunt by Lindsee Thurgood, Spanish Fork had a great opportunity to pick up runs in the bottom of the inning with runners on second and third with one out. Springville pitcher Sarah Clark settled down and proceeded to pick up two of her six strike outs to end the threat. The third inning proved to be the deciding factor as Springville loaded the bases with two outs. A fly ball to left fielder Kylie Brinkerhoff ended the Red Devil threat, stranding the runners. Trailing by one, thefirsttwo Lady Dons reached on errors in the bottom of the third. Elliott picked up her second RBI of the game with a single to tie the contest at 2-2. More info can be found on line at www.spanishfork.org. Tayler Mountford / Spanish Fork News FAST PITCH: SF pitcher Cami Robinson recorded five strikeouts against Springville. Senior Aly Tingey crushed a grand-slam over the left field fence to give Spanish Fork a 6-2 lead. The Tingey home run proved to be. the deciding blow as both teams picked up an extra run in the sixth inning. Springville added two in the seventh with the help of two Spanish Fork errors to make it interesting before Robinson induced a pop fly to the shortstop to end the game and preserve the Don's 7-5 victory. Coach Andrews was pleased with his team's performance. Seven of the nine Lady Don starters picked up hits, while eight of the nine reached base at least one time. "It was a good win against a quality team and a quality pitcher," Andrews said. Soccer Dons take on Cedar City Danielle Jones STAFF WRITER On March 13 the young Spanish Fork High School boys soccer team, faced off against Cedar City. It was a close game in which both teams battled fiercely for the lead, but Cedar City outlasted the Dons to win 3-2. Spanish' Fork attacked first with a goal by Arturo Hernandez. "It felt great to score the first varsity goal in pre-season," said Arturo Hernandez. However, Cedar City answered back with two consecutive goals, which gave them the lead going into half time. Jose Olivares tied it up at 2-2 on a penalty kick in the second half. With a few minutes left in regulation, Cedar City scored a goal giving them the 3-2 victory. The Dons fought hard, but had a difficult time converting Danielle Jones / Spanish Fork News KICKIN' IT: SFHS took on Cedar City on March 13, losing 3-2. shots into goals. "We had lots of shots, but they just wouldn't go in. Also we needed to communicate more and want to win more than the other team did," said Spanish Fork wing Vallan Sherrod. Spanish Fork is a young team with only three players — Arturo Hernandez, Allan Measom and Sam Roberts — returning with varsity experience. "Our team is very young," said Spanish Fork Coach Sara Atuaia. "Right now, we are trying to find each player's place and work out our different weaknesses. We are just trying to get experience that will prepare us for region." They may be young, but the team still has high expectations. "I want to win and make it to state," said Arturo Hernandez. The 2008 season captain is senior Allan Measom. The other seniors are Vallan Sherrod, Jose Olivares and Austin Blanchard. The Dons begin region play April 1, 2008 at home against Timpanogos. Local athletes play in All-Star Classic Chad Vest STAFF WRITER On Tuesday, March 11, 2008, the Daily Herald helped sponsor the girls/boys Utah Valley Ail-Star Classic held at Timpview High School. Both Spanish Fork High and American Leadership Academy had players chosen to participate in this annual event to reward them for their outstanding play for the '0708 hoops season. The boys selected for the Dons were Dallin Naulu, Matt Gardner and Zac Clayton, while the girls sent seniors Natasha Sandborn, Aly Tingey and Jenna Johnson. The ALA Eagles were represented by Casandra Ascencio, who won the girls' three-point contest during halftime with an eyepopping seven treys in 30 seconds. ; ; The girls* all-star game got under way at 6 p.rii. and turned out to be a close contest with the North team edging the South 75^69. in fact, the North squad relied on multiple three-pointers to come out on top. Mighty Don senior Natasha Sandborn chipped in 14 points to lead all scorers as she seemed , to be on top of her game inside the paint. Tingey, who currently is a star outfielder in softball, was known on the hardwood for her sweet stroke from downtown among other things. This mighty senior enjoyed quality playing time even though she didn't launch aerial assaults on her opponent like in the regular season. "I only shot twice," said Tingey. "I went for the assists in the game and I think I ended up with five or six." She also performed in the three-point contest, knocking down four treys but only found out about her invitation when the announcers called her name just before shootoff. "I was nervous because I didn't know I was supposed to be in the three-point contest," said Tingey. "I was late for the game, so I didn't get to warm up but the whole experience was a lot of fun." Johnson finished a stellar career at SF High and also received plenty of minutes in her final game as a high school hoops star. On the boys' side, not one sharp-shooter from SF took part in the dunk or long ball contests, but all three played significant minutes in their final game as seniors. The South team hit 19 treys to combat their opponents' inside game, led by several of Lone Peak's jolly green giants. But in the second half, they went cold and fell by the score of 120-100. Now if you're familiar with allstar games, you know that defense isn't a high priority especially when both teams score in the triple digits in only 32 minutes of play. "There's no defense at all," said Gardner. "It didn't feel like a real game but it was definitely fun. The game wasn't too important so it was fun to talk to the other team. We didn't have to be so serious and we could laugh at each other. That's what I liked." The fabulous trio of SF guards all connected from downtown on the evening. Gardner finished with seven points. Clayton hit a lone trey while Naulu chipped in 10 points with several assists. Naulu echoed Gardner's sentiments about the experience but added that it's great to finally play with rival players from neighboring schools instead of always going against them. "We've known them since the seventh or eighth grade," he said. "A lot of them are good guys. Going in, you don't know them very well, but once you get to know them, you see how funny they are ^nd it was just a lot of fun to play with them." It sounds like they all put on a show, but more importantly, fun was had by all. Youth Baseball and Softball Boys and girls third to ninth grade should register now for youth teams.
