Show Tifi A4 • WEDNESDAY, MARCH 19, 2008 Covering what matters most Portrait of the Artist Woodland Hills' Lynn Poulter Hilarie Orman STAFF WRITER Artist, teacher and Woodland Hills pioneer Lynn Poulter is a man who can talk about aesthetics while pouring concrete for a driveway. A creative artist who has never shied from the practical, he has let his craftsmanship express his vision in everything he does, be it a larger-than-life whimsical statue, the curve of concrete around a downspout, or nature-inspired door hardware. His work is used and displayed in homes, lodges, the Nauvoo Temple, galleries, and sculpture gardens in Utah and Florida. His neighbors know him and his wife, Lynette, as the people who really embody the spirit the of the city. Having been among the very first residents, they helped define what that spirit is, and part of that is an appreciation of the beauty of nature. Poulter says that there was never any doubt that he would be an artist. He was much in demand in first and second grade as the go-to guy for the snowman and Santa Claus posters BUILDER for decorating the school, and he OF CUSTOM thinks he spent HOMES FOR 30 more time with poster paint than YEARS he did with books. He enrolled at BYU in a fine arts including: major, married his freshmanclassmate, Lynnette, started a family, and flung himself into the life of a working artist. Numerous Awards People's Choice • Judges • Presidential For a time he switched to a business major, perhaps because he has always had a good sense of economy, but he realized that his course in life had to be founded on art, so he returned to the fine arts program. Having learned to pour concrete for construction jobs while in high school, he took on all the work he could find outside of class hours. Carefully packing his schedule, he added education classes, so that he graduated with his fine arts degree, a teaching certificate, a contractor's license, and a great deal of skill in sculpture and portraiture. He also decided that he wanted to live in Woodland Hills, which at that time had only a handful of residents and little in the way of utility services or roads. t He found that Utah was desperate for art teachers, and so he decided to try a one year stint teaching at Provo High. This lasted for 30 years. Many of his students have become successful professional artists, in part because as Poulter says, they "passed through his sphere of influence." All his students got the benefit of his lessons in investigating compositional alternatives and his ability to imbue even a mundane artifact with artistic form. One of these successes is his own son, Zach, a graphic artist. ;vv His dedication to his own art has produced a varied and extensive repertoire. His work graces the gates around Sylvester Stallone's estate's pool where gate handles are based on a "Little Mermaid" design. The door handles for Daniel's Summit Lodge were made by Poulter and feature animal head motifs. The Utah Arts Council commissioned him to create the kitchen and door hardware for Chase House. A recent work of his was commissioned for a publicswimming pool in Florida; his "Miss Libert/* is a young woman perfectly balanced in preparation for a leap of joy. This remarkable work can be seen at the "A" Gallery in Salt Lake City. One of his most challenging •projects was to make decorative tops (capitals) for columns in the Nauvoo Temple. Some sketches from the original architect depicted a sun rising over acanthus leaves, and Poulter carefully translated that into a 3-dimensional clay design. The Poulters1 Woodland Hills home, where they raised their family through the early days of the city, is where Lynn continues his artistic work. He and Lynette have designed a home thai includes a studio, computers and displays art from their travels, including a year in China.
