Show -N E W S- Spanish Fork A6 • WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 27, 2008 Covering what matters most Committee plans Nebo Cultural Statute of Responsibility opens doors in Spanish Fork Arts and Heritage Center Ashley Walton STAFF WRITER Statue of Responsibility, which has just opened an office in Spanish Fork, is a non-profit organization whose purpose is to erect a statue on the west coast which will be known as a symbol of responsibility. The idea came from Victor Frankl who suggested that since we have a Statue of Liberty on one east end of the nation, it is necessary that we have a Statue of Responsibility on the west, since you cannot have one without the other, and liberty + responsibility = our freedom. This organization has inspired people all over the United States to get involved with this project. In fact, there are people from over 20 states and a dozen countries who are pulling for this statue. "People all over the world believe in this project because of its message, not because of the artistic sculpture," said David Bolz, president and CEO of Statue of Responsibility. "People feel the message of this monument will permeate to other countries because it completes the freedom equation. Liberty needs to be balanced with responsibility for our freedom. Many feel that we are too focused on our rights, and not our responsibility, and this feeling is not unique to the United States." This project has been in the works for quite some time. The artists, Gary Price ofUtah, wascommissionedin 1997, yet the organizational foundation was not made a 'reality until 2002, but Bolz hopes that it will made a reality in the decade of 2010. The project is still in the pre-launch phase, meaning initial costs are still being raised. An exact location for the statue has not been set, but The Statue of Responsibility is hoping that orice initial costs are met, they will be able to campaign on a larger scale, and different cities oh the west coast will bid to have the statue. The statue will be the same height as the Statue of Liberty (300 feet high) and will include an observation deck on top, and a pavilion around the statue. Such a construction will be quite a feat to raise funds for. "We have had so many people helping us along the way, and it is amazing to see the reach that this project has," said Bolz. He gets phone calls from people all over the world who are interested in donating to the project or in spreading the word. All the funds raised to build this monument are from private donors, since Statue of Responsibility is a not-for-profit organization. Donations are taxdeductible and can be made by calling 801-990-3130. For more information on the organization or the statue, visit the website of Statue of Responsibility at HYPERLINK "http://www. sorfoundation.org" www. sorfoundation.org or stop in the Spanish Fork office located at **** Main Street to look at sketches and models of the monument. "I want to make sure to thank so many people in this city," said Bolz. "This city has been so nice to us. The landlord of this building, Rick Cook, is donating this space, rent-free. And Steve Ogden's carpet donated this nice, plush, beautiful carpet. This is just a really great community and we are very grateful to the local business owners." The Nebo Cultural Arts and Heritage Center is meant to be a facility that serves the entire south Utah County area, and is a true multi-use facility that can become the cultural "hub" of the community. It is meant to provide a home for the Spanish Fork Community Theater, the Spanish Fork Youth Theater, the Nebo Chorale, the Nebo Philharmonic Orchestra, and the several programs and events sponsored and organized annually by the Spanish Fork Arts Council such as the Summer Youth Arts Festival and the Cultural Arts Education for Adults program. It is also anticipated that other performing groups such as the Utah Valley Children's Choir and possibly some dance or other arts-related groups would utilize this Center as their "home" as well. 'Another aim of the Center is to promote the heritage of this area in a meaningful and lasting way by involving such groups as the Icelandic Association, Daughters of the Utah Pioneers, the Historical Society and other similar groups. This could be realized through a museum or gallery or other specific features that would be a permanent part of the facility. It is anticipated that certain rooms in this Center could be utilized by local and area businesses for conventions, receptions, parties, etc. It is also understood that this facility could incorporate a new Senior Center and even be "partnered" with the new library. The vision is that a Cultural Arts and Heritage Center will truly'enhance the quality of life in this community, greatly contribute to the economic well-being of the city, and provide many opportunities currently unavailable to the individuals and families in the region. The committee meets every fourth Wednesday of each month from 6-7 p.m. in the City Council Room at City Hall. The committee is still open to additional members. Any current 'SPANISH F0RIO i l l CLU] TRAR member of the committee may'invite other individuals to participate. Members should begin to determine in what sub-committee they could best serve. Sub-committees may include: Feasibility Study, Focus Group Presentations, Capital Campaign (Fundraising), Facility Design and Publicity/PR. Leadership positions on the Executive Board will be solidified by the meeting in March. Chair, Assistant Chair, Secretary, and Treasurer will be nominated positions with a one year term of service, with the option of serving multiple terms. Sub-committee Chairs will also be part of the Executive Board. The project strategy outline was approved by the committee on Sept. 12, 2007. City Council support in this effort is crucial. All funding for this facility has to come from private donations, corporate donations and the general public. The only funds necessary from the city would be for land, and possibly some costs associated with the feasibility study and fundraising software. The funding estimate is $15 million, $3 million of which would be for an endowment fund to take care of operation and maintenance. Mayor Joe Thomas and Junior Baker (city attorney) are working on forming a non-profit entity 501(c)3 to handle fundraising efforts, which they should have finalized by April. Fundraising software will have to be purchased to keep track of donations. The feasibility study is the next major phase of the project. The initial plan is conduct focus group meetings with specific arts disciplines in Spanish Fork, and neighboring communities (Salem, Woodland Hills, Payson, Elk Ridge, Santaquin, Springville) that would be using the facility. Many contacts have already been made. Others are still needed.
