Spanish Fork hung in the game with some big shots from three point land and could've kept it real close with better production from the charity line. The Dons only converted 6/14 from the stripe during the first half and trailed their opponent 30-19 at intermission. Spanish used crisp passes around the perimeter to combat the Knights' quick zone defense. After the home team went on a small run, Gardner connected on another three-point shot to spark his club. Some good defense by the Dons followed and Zac Clayton began to heat up. He nailed two consecutive treys to stay within ten. However, the Knights' big men led by Bracken Funk (27 points) made life difficult for the Dons with defensive rebounds. Lone Peak's inside game looked nearly flawless and to make matters worse, they began to connect from downtown. Spanish began using a full-court press for hopes of a comeback and senior Shaun Peterson began to find his stroke. Petey went 2/4 from three-point land and re-energized the Dons attack. Some back door lay-ups resulted as well, but the Dons still trailed 50-34 heading into the fourth. The Knights took a 24point lead midway through the final period. Last year's 5A MVP T/ler Haws combined with teammate Funk to score 47 of the team's 72 points. In fact, Haws had a couple of breakaway dunks during the contest. When the home team began to pull away even further, both coaches elected to replace their starters with about three minutes remaining. Even though they weren't at their best, the Dons never stopped hustling. Spanish struggled from the field by going 13/43 and shot just under 50 percent from the line. Clayton and Peterson both led the Dons with 10 points apiece. Naulu finished with six assists and Nelson grabbed six boards. |
