Third-graders from Mapleton to Santaquin came to compete. Congratulations to Matthew Lawler, right, a third grader in Mr. Paul Bradley's class at Mt. Loafer Elementary, who was named the winner of the District Spelling Bee. Matthew worked hard in preparing for the contest and beat the competition by spelling the final word, understand. S-P-E-L-L-l-N-G: In December as a service project, Glen Roach from Central Bank donated a dictionary to every third grade student at Brockbank Elementary. A class spelling bee was then held in each of the three third grade classes, where the top three spellers from each class had the opportunity to participate in a school spelling bee. The school spelling bee was sponsored by the Rotary Club and was held on Jan. 28, 2008. Parents and grandparents were invited to come and watch. All of the students did very well and had fun competing against each other. Johanna Lorentzen placed first and will compete in a district spelling bee. Shiann Smart placed second. Pictured are the nine class winners that participated in the school spelling bee. Front, left to right, are Dylan Burt, Andrea Hansen, Annalysia Sharp, Johanna Lorentzen, and Talia McKinney. The author was Rick Riordan, author of The Lightning Thief, The Sea of Monsters, and The Titan's Curse. The books are about a sixth grade boy named Percy Jackson who finds out he is half human and half Greek god. Once a student begins reading this adventure, they are unable to put them down! The 25 students were thrilled to meet the man who wrote the stories they have so quickly come to love and ask questions about where his ideas originated. They also presented him with blue candy and other treats, a favorite of his main character, Percy Jackson. The students await his fourth book, The Battle of Labyrinth, coming out on May 6, 2008, with great anticipation. In case neither team was a favorite, they had an additional poster for students to write the team the wish would be playing the Super Bowl. They worked hard and enjoyed promoting the activity they enjoy the most... sports! Working on our county reports was a lot of fun. We got to choose our counties and search online. We also got to sing songs about them. We had a choice if we wanted to make a poster or a book. Most people chose posters and only some chose books. It was fun reading about other counties, too. We learned a lot about the counties. |
