Show -NEWS- Spanish Fork Covering what matters most WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 13, 2008 - B7 Tanner wins at Region The Region 10 PTA Reflections Awards Program was held at the Provo School District's Art Center on Jan. 31, 2008. This year's theme was "I Can Make a Difference...". The region winners came from students in the Provo and Nebo School Districts. There are 52 schools from Provo down to Santaquin and Goshen. They had almost 3,000 entries from the local level entered into this year's Reflections Contest. Students who were winners on this evening had been previous first, place winners at their schools and at the council levels. In attendance at the evening's program were Nebo School District's Superintendent, Chris Sorensen, and Ray Morgan from the Provo School District to present students with their awards. We want to congratulate Anna Tanner from Canyon Elementary who took first place in the Dance Choreography Division. Young writers gather Mary Lou Flinders READING COUNCIL Chase James Andrea Christensen Kenny Prestwich Kailey Christensen McKay Lewis Marty Sperry SFJH honors students of month Chase James Chase Jones is ninth grader and the son of Boyd and Janet James of Lakeshore. Chase enjoys all of his classes in school; but his favorites are World Civilizations, FFA, Science, Math, and English. He enjoys his teachers and the other students he gets to interact with in his classes. Chase is an avid outdoorsman- he loves to hunt and camp. He also plays football. In the future, he would like to pursue a private hunting business or become a Wildlife Resources Officer. Chase has a funny sense of humor and a great personality. Andrea Christensen Andrea Christensen is a ninth grader and the daughter of Craig and Soofie Christensen of Salem. Her favorite classes include Public Speaking, P.E., and Seminary because she has great teachers and classmates in all of these classes. She maintains a 4.0 GPA. Andrea She enjoys participating in all sports and activities introduced in RE. Andrea's favorite sport is volleyball. She played on the SFHS Sophomore team this year. Besides being an athlete, she is also an accomplished pianist. Andrea was one of only twenty young pianists throughout Utah Valley chosen to perform in a special Honors Recital! She plans on pursuing a college degree in Elementary School Education as well as becoming a piano instructor. Andrea is learning to play the organ. She enjoys hopping on her pogo stick and is able to perform stunts with it such as jumping a rope while hopping. Kenny Prestwich Kenny Prestwich is an eighth grader and the son of Riley and Eva Prestwich of Benjamin. His favorite class i: is his French class where he enjoys studying language and culture. Kenny has a variety of interests including: wrestling, football, biking, motocross, hunting and camping. When he graduates he plans on pursuing medicine and becoming a doctor or becoming a motocross racer. Kenny is a people person and enjoys the opportunity to help others out without expectation. When asked to share something unique about himself, Kenny said that he is "weird in a funny way". Kailey Christensen Kailey Christensen is an eighth grader and the daughter of Raul and Jeanette Christensen of Spanish Fork. She looks forward to learning new things every day. When asked a hard question, she enjoys the surprised reactions she gets when able to answer! Kailey lives at the baseball park during the summer months where she plays softball. She plans on going into medicine and becoming a plastic surgeon when she is an adult. Kailey is active in the 4-H Program. She shows steers and cows. McKay Lewis McKay Lewis is a seventh grader and the son of Mike and Tammy Lewis of Spanish Fork. McKay is a great student and school citizen. He belongs to the Lobo Club and enjoys the club activities. He also like to spend time with his friends at school. McKay is an athlete and participates in track, football, and basketball. Last year he qualified to compete at the national level in track! McKay has very lofty career goals. He would like to be a lawyer and someday serve on the Supreme Court. He is a very outgoing boy. Marty Sperry Marty Sperry is a seventh grader and the daughter of Ken and Tina Sperry of Spanish Fork. Marty has enjoyed being in junior high. Her favorite things about it are the teachers and having a locker, which is pretty handy. Her teachers are always nice and she loves their lessons. Marty is an avid reader and her favorite books have been the Harry Potter Series. She also enjoys music and has been playing the violin for two years now. Marty has a big heart and would like to become a nurse and work with newborns. She wants to be there when someone needs her help. Marty is proud of her namesake. She is named after her great grandma and grandpa. Her parents were married by LDS Prophet, Thomas S. Monson. In fifth grade, Marty was nominated to attend a leadership conference in Washington DC. She had a great experience! Nebo School District's annual Young Writer's Conference, sponsored by the Nebo Reading Council, was held at Diamond Fork Junior High on Feb. 9. The conference ran from 8:45 a.m.-l :30 p.m., including lunch and the author's book sale and autograph session. The presenters were James Dasher, Julie Olson, J. Scott Savage and Chris Schoebinger. James Dasher was born and raised in a small town in Georgia surrounded by a creepy forest that provided many ideas for stories later on in life. His love of books and writing made him dream of being an author someday, and he still can't believe how fortunate he is to have his v *dream come true. Dasher loves many things, but mostly his family, writing, reading, sports, movies, potato chips, autumn weather and naps. Though previously published The 13th Reality: A Journal of Curious Letters is his first nationally released novel. Julie Olson was born on the East coast, raised in the Midwest, and settled in the West. She's no dummy when it comes to picture books. Since graduating with a BFA in Illustration- from BYU nine years ago, she's illustrated numerous books for the educational market, many children's magazine articles, a few board games, and five books for [he retail market (with 2 more in the works). Some of Olson's books include "Hip, Hip Hooray for Annie McRae!" and "Already Asleep." J, Scott Savage is the author of four published novels with three more coming out this year. He has published mysteries, thrillers, drama, and will be publishing a youngs adult fantasy series called' "Fanvorld" this fall with Shadow Mountain. Savage has taught dozens of classes and conferences, and will be heading up the Storymakers Writer's Conference in 2009. , Chris Schoebinger is a publishing director and acquisitions editor for Shadow Mountain Publishing based in Salt Lake City. Chris discovered New York Times bestselling author Brandon Mull, author of the "Fablehaven" series, and Obert Skye, author of the award-winning "Leven Thumps" series. He also discovered Jason Wright, author of "Christmas Jars" and "The Wednesday Letters" — both New York Times bestsellers. For 2008, Schoebinger is excited about the national launch of two rising stars in children's literature, James Dashner, "The 13th Reality", and J. Scott Savage, "Farworld". The Young Writer's conference is for everyone interested in developing* their writing skills. It is open to students from fifth grade to twelfth grade, college students and teachers. Canyon NO GREATER HERO: Utah Valley University students came to Canyon Elementary and presented a high-energy assembly about avoiding the "trap" of drugs. She has three sisters and one brother. Jennah is an outstanding first-grader. She excels in all areas. Jennah likes to draw and paint. She also loves reading and sports.
