"We wanted to get a half marathon together," said Carolyn Creer, one of the founders of the race. "Kelly gave us the push and actually got it up and going. We would love to have more people come out and run, but we're happy with what we're getting. We get a lot of the same people coming back to run year after year. We get a lot of positive feedback." Dr. David Ludlow said the running club that organized the race is "a very loosely knit organization" they call the Spanish Fork Running Club. Creer said the first year they did the race it was really hard to put together. "But after that it got easier. We knew who to contact, and what to do." Ludlow said the race originated as a fund raiser. "We wanted to do some kind of a fund raiser six years ago when one of our members died." Their mutual friend, Dev Duke, was killed in a freak accident in a fireworks stand. "After that year, it's kind.of morphed into a fund raiser for a scholarship, which is largely from the proceeds of the half marathon," Ludlow said. The scholarship is done through the Nebo Foundation. "We set it up so it's for someone who has overcome some type of physical problem, and is planning to continue through some post-high school training," Ludlow said. Nielsen said they have about 15 sponsors for the half marathon. "They've donated gifts, prizes, cash, just a lot Of things they'll be giving away in the raffle ... i-pods, tvs, digital cameras. But you have to finish the race Steve Hardman / Spanish Fork News RECORD FINISH: Whitney Gebert leaves the rest of the field in the dust in the 5K. to qualify for the raffle." Nielsen said there's a $25 gift certificate for the male and female winners. "We try to make it a fun event and give away a lot of cool prizes," said Nielsen. SAM'S PREP OF T H E WEEK Garrett Moss • Golf • Freshman • Though only a freshman, Garrett Moss is currently first place in the region in golf. Garrett has led Spanish Fork to a 16 shot lead in the region. Coach Binghom said, "[Garrett] expects a lot out of himself. One of the things he has going for him is his confidence. He trusts his swing." We look forward to seeing more great golf from this young man, both at SFHS and at the next level. |LmtT7 .TAX .
