His baler got plugged, and he was dealing with the problem when his sleeve caught in the machinery, and started sucking him into it, first his hand, and then his arm. He couldn't pull free. For 15 minutes, Evans said he was certain he would die. He tried shouting, and then remembered his cell phone and dialed 911, but the phone was knocked from his hand by the baling tines. His wife, Susan, who is an ER said she had just come home from a shift at the hospital when the phone rang. It was dispatch, and they had just received a cell phone call from her location, but they didn't have any idea where or who it was from. "I thought he'd been kidnapped or something, but when they said they heard machinery in the background, I knew where he was," Susan said. The Evans' neighbors, the Badertschers, were home. She thought she heard the baby crying. She went to check, and realized it wasn't the baby, but a faint scream for help floating across the fields. She sent her husband out to check, and he arrived at the scene just as Susan and her son, Skyler, did. Skyler immediately set to work trying to free his father.
