I sat in my car pondering why a place of business would have to solicit employees this way. We in Utah, and especially Utah County, have one of the youngest populations in the country. So how is it possible we don't have enough workers to fill positions? I think I know the answer. Parents think they are protecting their child's future by not allowing them to work doing what some might view as menial tasks. Perhaps parents are afraid their child will get stuck in that job and thus not realize their full potential. Maybe parents are protecting their Childs "right to a childhood" that they think includes friends, games, not doing household chores, and not having to join the workforce until it is necessary. (It is possible to work and still have a great childhood). Perhaps it is just too inconvenient to give them a ride to work. Parents who have their children work, I applaud you! I realize that there are situations that don't allow for some to work and that's fine, but there sure are an awful lot of kids in this town for that to be the case. I have two children that work because we expect it, not because they need to. We could easily provide for their every wish, such as a car, video games, IPODs and any other modern convenience. Buying kids everything they want does nothing for their ego or self esteem. Unless they earn a dollar and have to spend it on something they what, they will never know the value of a dollar and will keep coming to you as if there were an endless supply. Later that day, my wife was talking to her sister, who is a dentist. She asked how our kids are doing and my wife said "fine." My wife commenced to tell her about how our children are working and liking their jobs — one works at Shopko and the other at Hogi Yogi. Her sister promptly replied, "That is so sad." My wife said "What is sad?" Illegal immigrants Great job, News staff I was very pleased to read the letter to the editor in the paper on the subject of illegals in our country. It was a wonderful letter that mirrors my feelings exactly. I would like to let the writer of that particular letter to the editor that I appreciate what he wrote, and I would like to solicit Congratulations on so well. We currently have a petition seeking a review of North Park and the impact it has on the lives of many of us. In seeking signatures for our petition I have found that many people are concerned about the loss of open space and the impact a large commercial development will have on the environment and the people directly involved Island Franks with relocation. As for the issues at the Senior Center, that is another story. Please get involved and let us know how you feel about these issues. Email us at sfnorthpark@yahoo.com. I guess my sister-in-law feels she is protecting her kids from what she deemed a not-so-fun childhood. I worry about the future. Our country is not solely successful because of our educated population; it is also about the work ethic we learn as kids. How can businesses prosper or compete if they can't find teen workers willing to "pay their dues" by working for a small wage? Dave Marston Spanish Fork to realize is that it should not be about the money, but more importantly, about what skills they are learning and how having a particular job will help them achieve their career goals. That is another thing, sit down and help them define possible career goals, before going to high school. Not the career that you want them to have, but rather the career they are interested in. If they want to learn how to take care of growing plants, landscaping and sprinkler systems, then have them get a job at a city parks dept. If they are interested in a legal profession, have them apply for a summer job, or volunteer, at a law office. If they want to go into the medicalfield, how about an unpaid internship at a medical office or pharmacy? Do they have an interest in cars? Have them work with mechanic or at an auto parts store. Preparedness isn't just about storing food and water, even though that is important. Preparing our children with life skills and the ability to reason and work is vitally important. It is a waste of time, life and money if our kids go out in the world without useable skills. I have always felt that everybody should have a technical skill and a profession. Don't just let your child's life just sort of happen, but, instead, prepare them to make educated choices and decisions that help them get to where they want to be someday - when they've grown up. Correction Making things right The original meaning of part of last week's Ready or Not column is drastically different from what was printed. The text was printed as follows: "My philosophy on motherhood is to become a caretaker. After all, if I am going to have my kids take care of me when I get old, then I need to teach them how." The correct text is as follows: "My philosophy on motherhood is to become obsolete — not as a loving, caring mother, but as a caretaker. After all, if I am going to have my kids take care of me when I get old, then I need to teach them how." We apologize to Dawn Van Nosdol for incorrectly editing her article. i ' I i ' .
