Skyhawks hockey off to a good start The newly-organized Salem Hockey Skyhawks are off to a great year, with one tie and two wins. They started off the season with a JV 4-4 tie against Davis at the Olympic Oval, in West Jordan, on Sept. 9, and re- cently played a tough game and won against Brighton on Saturday, with a score of 1-0, in another JV game. Two nights prior to that win, they outplayed the Lehi varsity in a 13-0 win, with an estimated 100 sup- portive student body and parents in the stands. What great support! The team is coached by Dan Mehr, Scott Richards and Cameron Lollin. and they are always looking for additional players. Come out and sup- port the Salem Skyhawks at their next two home games, played at the Peaks Ice Arena in Provo on Oct. 2 at 9:15 p.m. against Timpanogos and Oct 9 at 7:45 p.m. against UCI, which is comprised of hockey players in our area that don't attend Salem High. The Salem Hills team is composed of: Luke Beeston, Bobby Clawson, Taylor Dascomb, Kyler Johnson, Ryan Lane, Phillip Lundell, Kasey Mcgee, Scott Mchr, Matt Puulsen, Ryan Preston, Edward Richards, Drew Christensen, Xander Holden, Shannon Royal, Kyle Stanton, Walker Beiliston, Clint Brown, Drew Peatross and Zach Halvorsen. Namon Bills / Spanish h'orh Notes ROAD WARRIORS: The Eagles traveled to Nephi for a tough game against Juab, currently ranked second in the state in 2A. The Wasps simply overwhelmed the Eagles, 45-7, with ALA's only score coming on a pass play in the fourth quarter. Above, ALA's Hunter Morley returns a kick. The Eagles next travel to Gunnison, Friday, Oct. 3. SAM'S PREP OF THE WEEK Richard Wilson • Senior • Football • Tight End/Strong Side Linebacker Richard Wilson is the son of Mark and Maryann Wilson of Spanish Fork. The big senior had a great game against American Fork on Friday, Sept. 26. He had four catches for 90 yards and two receiving touchdowns. He scored another TD on a fumble recovery. The Dons won, 34-13. "It was a good win/' Wilson said. "We started out good and played a whole game." Lady Dons take on PG The Spanish Fork Lady Dons began the second half of region play, traveling to the turf field of Pleasant Grove. Two weeks ago, when the Vikings visited Spanish Fork, the result was a 5-1 victory for the visitors. The first half of this latest match had some similarities in play. Unmarked players just outside the middle of the penally area allowed Pleasant Grove to get a number of shots off. The Vikings1 2-0 lead at halftimc looked to be more of the same. " Jennifer Youd was able tofindCourtney Acosta near the goal mouth, and Acosta finished with a sweet volley into the net. With the lead cut in half, Spanish Fork continued to attack well, getting some great shots on goal. The Lady Don defenders found their determination and shut down Pleasant Grove's offense. The score remained 2-1, but the girls played a much better game in the second half. "I was really pleased, with the active play of the! girls in the second half., They fought hard." said Coach Dennis Gillie. "It was fun to watch. A much better effort." \ |
