With close to 2,000 athletes from almost every state in the country, the Simplot Games is the largest indoor high school track meet in the U.S. Athletes from Spanish Fork, Maple Mountain and Salem Hills tested their skills against the best track athletes in America. When the dust had settled, several locals found success against the best. Maple Mountain distance ace Spencer Hanson ran a lifetime best in the 3200 meter trials to qualify for the Saturday final. Spencer came back two days later to post another lifetime best, 9:40, to place sixth overall and earn a medal on the podium. Teammate Parker Cressman also made his way to the podium with his sixth-place high jump effort of 6*3M. Parker's medal was awarded by former Olympic gold medalist Dick Fosbury, a regular guest at the Simplot Games. The mile relay team of Jordan Cuthbert, Eddie Prothero, Brent Strong and Jeff Brammer also qualified for the finals, ending up in eighth place overall with a season-best time of 3:34. Two STAFF WRITER The Lady Dons recognized seniors BayLee Cooper, Brynlie Nielsen, Erin Redd and Shea Johnson, prior to the final home game of the 2009-10 season. The SF girls were honored by their teammates and parents for great teamwork and a 4—1 home record. SF also honored the surprised seniors from Uintah in a nice gesture of sportsmanship. Spanish Fork dismantled the Uintah defense in the first quarter with an active box-and-one defense, as Jen Huntsman bounced around causing confusion with the double team. The Lady Dons received pinpoint passing from Brynlie Nielsen, racking up five assists in the first quarter. Nielsen led a potent attack as she found Redd, Emerine and Huntsman in the post. Shea Johnson scored two layups back-to-back as Uintah struggled with the height of the Lady Dons in the post, and Spanish Fork led 16-6 ending the first quarter. Uintah found an offensive rhythm in the second quarter, scoring 13 points, led by Lexi Bolden with six. The Lady Dons continued to run their fast break, scoring 14 points as SF distributed the ball to four different players, and the Dons led 30-19 at halftime. The Lady Dons scored five quick points as BayLee Cooper got the hot hand with a layup and a threepointer, which pushed the SF lead to 16. Uintah looked inside to Labrum, who had five third-quarter points, but the Utes could not slow down Nielsen as she found Huntsman, Redd and Johnson for easy baskets and the Lady Dons held a 42-33 advantage after three quarters. Uintah was held to four points in the fourth quarter. The Utes forced passes and Spanish Fork controlled the post, led by Redd with four blocks. The Lady Dons' offense maintained its proficiency as Brynlie found Redd on the fast break for two. Nielsen rejected a Uintah shot and went coast-to-coast, scoring the layup and hitting the bonus for a three-point play. Redd and Johnson finished off the Utes with six straight points, and the Lady Dons defeated Uintah convincingly as the buzzer sounded, 54—36. The Lady Dons pushed their region record to 8-2 and enter the state tournament as a number-two seed. The Dons' offense is peaking just in time for tournament play as SF traveled to St. George to battle with Pine View on Tuesday. Good luck to the SF girl's basketball team qualifying for the state tournament for the first time in four years.
