Show Sentinel Guardian of Your Community News WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 24, 2010 • A3 The 2010 Olympics Kiwanis There and Back Again Shirlene R. Ottesen You know you are from a small town if ... your football coach suggests that you haul hay for the summer to get stronger. The power has come back on our area now so I am able to use my computer to write this column. When the power goes off I feel like I have one arm tied behind my back. Almost everything I go to do requires electricity. I don't know what the problem was, but it happened while we were milking. Paul got the generator going so we didn't get too far behind on the chores. It doesn't happen very often, but it's good to have a back up plan. I couldn't vacuum, iron, cook, use my telephone or computer and my house was too dark to read so I just decided to take a nap, which I did. I do have a lantern close by that I could have read a book, but it was a good excuse to get out a fleece blanket and take a short nap. Well, I did it again! I forgot to wish everyone a Happy Valentine's Day. I'm always a week late. I hope you had a nice day. The kids in school were excited about their par- ties and making valentine boxes and all the treats they got. As usual, many of the valentines were advertisements for Disneyland or popular kid's shows. I wish that just one company would make valentines that are warm and fuzzy, like the one's in the "old days." Like the one with a cute yellow duck on it that says, "It would be ducky if you would be my valentine", or the little girl holding a school slate that has a heart drawn on it with the letters "U-R4 Me." Or the one that shows a coffee pot and a tea pot and it says, "Golly Valentine, could a "Pot" like you go for a "Drip" like me." See aren't they the best kind. Not all the Hollywood stuff. I also missed Abraham Lincoln's birthday which was on Feb. 12,2010. He was a great president and born for his time in the history of our country. President George Washington's birthday was on Monday, Feb. 22(and our daughter Janeen's birthday). I think a lot of people are wishing that we had such leadership in our country now. We need people who are statesmen, (and women) not politicians. Just so I don't get behind on the holidays, I'll wish you a Happy St. Patrick's Day in March and a Happy Easter on April 4, 2010. Now I'm all caught up on the holidays until May! The Olympics in Vancouver have had some problems. Where is the snow when you need it? Things just aren't working out the way they had planned. It's too bad they couldn't get some of the snow that the East got too much of this winter. One place had way more than enough and the other didn't get what they needed. It would have been a win-win situation for all. The sports that were held inside were okay, but the ones that needed lots of snow and less sunshine had some difficulties. Vancouver is such a beautiful city. I was hoping it would be a big success for them. After spending all the time, money and effort in building all that it takes to put the Olympics on it's too bad that the weather just did not cooperate. But, that's Murphy's Law and life in general. I even heard on the radio the other day that maybe Salt Lake has a good chance of having the Olympics coming to Utah again. I think that's a good idea! We had the opportunity to come in contact with a lot of people in 2002 and I never heard one complaint or negative remark from anyone. So if we did a great job once, I'm sure we could do a repeat performance. The project involves bringing water from Strawberry Reservoir to cities in Utah County and Salt Lake County. There are five pipeline projects involved with this last phase of the project. Some will be completed by November, while the others will be started or completed by 2015. When completed, these pipelines will meet the future needs for water in all our local communities. Doug Lund conducted the meeting. Chad Bunn led the pledge and Alan Johnson gave the prayer. Mark Nelson made arrangements for the speaker. Pictured, are Doug Lund and Mark Breitenbach.
