It seems that nearly everyone in the country was patting themselves on the back after electing the first partly black president of the United States, and indeed it was an historic occasion. There was of course some concern among those who read about Mr. Obama's radical Marxist roots but it was considered impolite to bring that up during the campaign. Now, just weeks into his presidency, the bloom is off the rose. This was, after all, the man who promi sed "Change you can believe in." And what does he give us? An administration full of Clinton left overs, lobbyists and tax cheats, but I repeat myself. I don't think that was the change most voters Were looking for. A thoughtful political observer, (my brother), concluded that the reason dems have no problem with raising taxes is because they don't pay them anyway. The new president's first order of business, after restoring abortion funding abroad, was to ask Nancy Pelosi, Barney Frank and Harry Reid to furnish him 'with a pork-permeated wish list' from every Democrat. Last week my wife and I had lunch with some old friends. The woman was born in Argentina and witnessed first hand the elimination of the middle class as Peronistas socialized the nation. Socialized medicine there, our friend reported, was a complete debacle. The seeds of that are buried in tfie Obama plan. I recently heard a hysterical female Senator, demanding immediate action on the "stimulus," declare, "When a building is burning, you don't stand around and argue about the color of the fire engine." That's true Senator, but it beats throwing gasoline on the flames. Geezmail-ipil940@ msn.com 67-78/678 45 297 -fos•m:.. I'm expected to know by heart our saving and checking account numbers at the bank, plus the PIN number so I can do business over the phone. I have a hard time with that one. I keep getting it mixed up with the number of our automatic garage door opener. Then there's the social security number and the company federal tax I. D. number. When I go to a gas station to check one of my tires mat looks a little low, I'm asked "how much pressure do your tires hold?' "I don't know- just put a bunch in until it looks like it's going to pop. That should be enough." When I take my car to get the oil changed, I get a similar question -"What weight of oil do you use?' "Just put in what you did the last time I was in here." Always questions involving numbers. The other change that is coming is the 2 cent raise in postage stamps in May. So. now our stamps will be 44 cents. It's been pointed out that that wouldn't be a 4x400 record anywhere, much less at the Y. The actual time was 3:41.20. V.;,"; |
