As easy as it would seem to calculate records and crunch the numbers, the complexity of sports — particularly high school sports — pulls the question of success from the Scoreboard to the floorboards. I wouldn't presume to present an authoritative definition of athletic success, but I believe I witnessed a shining instance of it the other night when the Lady Dons basketball team took on Lone Peak here in Spanish Fork. After trailing the entire game, the girls managed to pull out the upset in the final seconds of the fourth quarter. But you can read more about that in the sports section. The question is, where was the success? Beyond the final score, it was how the girls got to the final score. The Lady Dons gave it their all in a true team effort. While their star player is back, it wasn't just the Jenna Johnson show. Everyone contributed; they worked together and played to each other's strengths. The win over Lone Peak was truly a team victory, and I think Coach Aubrey Johnson can consider that a success. But the team effort — and the overall success — was more than just Namon Bills / Spanish Fork News SECRET TO SUCCESS: Coach Aubrey Johnson instructs her team during a time-out. The Lady Dons' unified play is one aspect of their recent success. what happened on the court. What impressed me most was the overall atmosphere in the gym. It was electric. There were plenty of people in the stands — parents, students, teachers and administrators. The cheerleaders were there. Even the pep band came, filling the air with energy during timeouts and doubling as Spanish Fork's loudest cheering section. This is a marked difference from the girls' basketball games when I was in high school. One may well ask, "How do you know? You never went to a girls' basketball game when you were in high school." Exactly. And I was in the pep band. Kudos to band director Bryant Smith and his students for getting out to the game — especially when they went straight from there to the boys basketball game. The band made a huge difference in the atmosphere in that gym. Kudos as well to all the parents, students and fans that showed up. Win or lose, there's a lot of energy and support behind these girls, and I think that's as good an indication as any of a successful program. So thanks to everyone that was there that evening. You provided me with an insight into what athletic success truly is. If the Lone Peak game was any indication, the Lady Dons have a lot of success in their future. Ottesen My, my, my! How time, experience and age changes your perspective on life. To those of you who are somewhere around my age (75) did you, or maybe you didn't, ever make statements say 30. 40 years ago like, "When I get old I'm not going to be that way," or "I'll never do that when I get old," or "How come old people are like the way they are?" I can't remember how the saying goes, but in essence it says, "be careful of the words you speak because someday you may have to eat them." It's supposed to rhyme, but I can't remember the exact words. Anyway, I am surprised at how many of those sometimes very specific predictions of mine are going by the wayside. I used to think that women who wore their glasses around their neck on a chain looked rather funny. Guess where mine are? Around my neck. I don't have to wear them all the time and I got tired of putting them on and taking them off, so I decided that it was okay to wear them around my neck — funny looking or not. Plus, I spent a lot of time looking for my glasses and even lost a couple of pairs, so I came to the conclusion that it was the best way to keep track of them. thoughts are now taking on new meaning. We all know we're going to leave sometime and I don't think that many of us particularly fear dying, it's just how! My mother was a saver. I'm sure there are many of you reading this who can identify with this condition. Anyone who lived during the Depression was a saver just because it became, in many instances, a method of survival. I just finished, finally, compiling a book on the history of my parents and thanks to her, I had bushels of material to work with. Do you know how many newspaper clippings and receipts for purchases fit into an apple box? Not just one box, but several boxes. Hundreds! Thousands! And me? I have boxes of newspaper clippings, pictures from the past 75 years and so I guess I inherited her genes for saving. Also, after she died I went down to the basement and she had several of those plastic, zippered garment bags full of old coats. Probably every coat she had ever owned. She kept them "just in case." I bought a light sweatshirt jacket the other day and when I looked in my closet I realized that I had coats from way back when. So there you go. I am my mother's daughter! She traveled with a group from her work to enjoy the annual Rose Parade in Pasadena, Calif. In addition to seeing the parade, they also were able to visit the floats afterwards and observe up close the intricate ways the flowers were used to make the beautiful parade entries. The group also went on a couple of cruises on the Pacific Ocean where they observed sea life and visited Santa Catalina, Calif. Another highlight was a trip to Old Town. Doratha reported it was a wonderful trip. ••• Congratulations to Command Sgt. Major Steve Stone, who recently was among the group of one hundred soldiers receiving the "Freedom Salute Award" for their service in Afghanistan in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom.
