Courtesy photos GJHOULS AND GOBLINS: Brockbank kicked off their book fair by hosting Ghouls and Goblins (a.k.a. Dads and Donuts) on Oct. 19, 2007. Students were able to enjoying browsing through the books with their parents, grandparents, or a neighbor while enjoying a donut. Pictured left to right are Keilani, Aanya, Maka, and Katalina Naulu CUB TRACKS: To promote character education and good citizenship, students from Canyon Elementary are recognized as Canyon Cub Tracks Winners. Whenever teachers see students making good choices and exhibiting exemplary citizenship qualities, they give them a Cub Tracks card and put their name in a box at the office for the weekly drawing. East Meadows • SOUND EDUCATION: Steve James, singer/songwriter, came to Canyon Elementary and , presented a character education assembly to all of the students. His songs have messages of leadership, friendship and other character-building traits. Courtesy photo Park receives grant for instruments Lana Hiskey NEBO DISTRICT Leona Rowan, music technician at Park Elementary, received a grant through the Nebo Education Foundation for some Orff instruments. This grant will fund a collection of soprano, alto, and bass glockenspiels, metallophones and xylophones. "It is important for me to have the children enjoy themselves in my music class," Rowan said. "The Orff instruments will not only help me with instruction, but will bring enjoyment to the students as well. We are grateful to the Foundation for their generosity." Natalie Clyde, foundation president, said, "We as a foundation- commirtee feel it an honor to work within the community raising money for students of Nebo School District. With the growth we have been experiencing, teachers must be more creative and resourceful within the classroom. It is gratifying to visit these classrooms and see what the generous donations from our community are helping to achieve. We hope we are able to make a small difference in the education of our students." These grants are funded through the fund-raising efforts of the Nebo Education Foundation board. One fund-raising effort is the annual "Green Fever" golf tournament that helps fund these various grants throughout the year. The foundation also accepts donations from individuals and businesses to support projects. The Nebo Education Foundation is a 501 (c) (3) organization crea'ted to bring businesses and donors together for the benefit of Nebo District school children. The foundation carefully manages and disperses tax deductible donations to local schools. DAY ON THE FARM: East Meadows Elementary second graders went on a fun-filled field trip to Harward Farms and t&Farm Field Days in Lehi. They enjoyed getting their pumpkins and learning about agriculture. Mt. Loafer RED RIBBON WEEK ROCKS WITH STEVE JAMES: Students at Mt. Loafer Elementary School in Salem were able to not only enjoy the great music of Steve James, but were able to perform with him! As part of Red Ribbon Week, Steve James presented his Prevention Dimension music as students in each grade sang with him! Mr. James and Mt. Loafer students presented their songs to the parents in a special night performance and taught parents the importance of staying away from drugs and alcohol. Courtesy photo Spanish Oaks GIVING DRUGS AND VIOLENCE THE KICK: Spanish Oaks Elementary opened their Red Ribbon week with a "Kick Off" assembly with Steve James. He is the writer and musician who produced the Prevention Dimension Character Education program for the state of Utah. He has performed for over one million children throughout the state and nation. His lyrics include " I ' l l Be Nice" and "It's Hot to Not" which students enjoy learning. His songs have paved the way for students to become better citizens and make better choices.
