Park receives Freedom Gallery grant Lana Hiskey NEBO DISTRICT Rob Keddington, principal at Park Elementary, received a grant through the Nebo Education Foundation for a Freedom Gallery. This grant will fund a collection of pictures, curriculum guides and documents pertaining to the founding of the United States of America. Mr. Keddington stated, "We applied for the Nebo Foundation Grant to purchase a Freedom Gallery for our school. The Freedom Gallery is a beautiful reminder for all of us to be grateful for the sacrifice, dedication and quest for freedom exhibited by our nation's Founding Fathers. We appreciate the Foundation members and those'who have donated to the Nebo Foundation. Otherwise, we would not be able to have this beautiful display and its accompanying curriculum in our school." Kim Anderson, foundation board member, responded, "Schools are part of the foundation of a community. The Nebo Foundation Board is honored to be able to assist our great teachers and staff whom provide excellent educations to our children." These grants are funded through the fund-raising efforts of the Nebo Education Foundation board. One fund-raising effort is the annual "Green Fever" golf tournament that helps fund these various grants throughout the year. The foundation also accepts donations from individuals and businesses to support projects. The Nebo Education Foundation is a 501 (c) (3) organiza- tion created to bring businesses and donors together for the benefit of Nebo District school children. The foundation carefully manages and disperses tax deductible donations to local schools. Anyone interested in donating to Nebo District schools, classes or programs can do so through the Nebo Education Foundation. Your contribution is a tax deductible charitable gift as provided by law. The voucher provides scholarships ranging from $500-$3,000 per student, depending on family income and size. For five years, the public school system retains $4,500-$7,000 in funding for every child that uses a voucher. (The amount left behind is the amount of the voucher subtracted from the state's current $7,500 annual per pupil expenditure.) A "tidal wave" of well over 150,000 new students will flood into Utah public schools by 2015, according to Howard Stephenson, president of the Utah Taxpayers Association. "I worked with Gov. Jon Huntsman Jr. and leaders in the legislature to craft a way to release some of the pressure this tidal wave of students is creating," said Stephenson. "Each time a parent takes [a voucher], we can use the savings to pay for one of the new students coming into Utah." Without vouchers, Stephenson said that Utah has two options; to raise income and property taxes even more, or to accept lower spending per student. The public is invited to drop by the school at 185 East 400 North, Spanish Fork on Thursday, Nov. 1, 2007 from 3-7 p.m. (American Heritage is a private, non-profit, LDSbased school for pre-school through grade seven.) The voucher vote is Tuesday, Nov. 6, 2007. At the open house, copies of the legislation and other documentation will be available, as well as school director, Susan Morris, to answer questions. Morris has been involved in the school choice movement for seven years, and American Heritage School has received Carson Smith Special Needs Scholarships {state vouchers for special needs students) since that program's implementation in 2005. "Vouchers are already working for a few special needs students, while most remain in public schools," said Morris. "Vouchers are not about private schools versus public schools. They are about empowering parents to make choices for their own children, and about improving all schools for all Utah children."
