Show WEDNESDAY, JUNE 20, 2007 • B3 Covering what matters most Rewarding Learning Nebo Foundation awards scholarships Emily Kimball Alberto Arreola Kevin Cope Lana Hiskey NEBO FOUNDATION Nebo Education .Foundation received new privately funded scholarships available to students this year. They include the Live wElle, Nursing, Sabinsa, Jeremy Cooper, Steven Tanner and the Connie Chappie Swain Scholarships. Over $36,000 was awarded this spring to students within Nebo School District to assist them in furthering their educational opportunities. Fifty scholarships helped pay tuition to schools such as Utah Valley State College, Utah State University, Brigham Young University, Austin Community College, University of Utah, Snow College, Dixie College, Southern Utah University, College of Eastern Utah and BYU Idaho. Kevin Cope, Vision of the Future recipient wrote, "I want to express my gratitude to you, Dr. David Jones, for the generosity you have exhibited in my behalf... For this, I sincerely thank you so very much."1 The Nebo Education Foundation facilitates the awarding of privately funded . scholarships. People can contribute throughout the year to a specific scholarship. In the spring, students can apply through the counseling office at the high school. Our new Nursing Scholarship was set up by an anonymous donor who wants to help students succeed in the nursing field. One of this year's recipients of the Nursing Scholarship is Steffani Minson. She was awarded $500. She said, "I'm so grateful for this money. I'm excited that I will now be able to pursue my dream of becoming an RN. Thanks again for all of your love, money and support." "The Nebo Education Foundation provides an opportunity for students to obtain financial help. These, scholarships were set up by private individuals to help all students regardless of academic achievement," said foundation board member Ken Money. "All students have an opportunity to continue their educational goals." The following scholarships were awarded by separate committees for each scholarship in the Spanish Fork/ Salem area: Advanced Family Eyecare: Kevin Cope, $500 Argyle Legacy Scholarship: Amanda Brown, $1,000; T^rel Carter, $1,000; Gillian Clark, $1,000; Emily Christensen, $1,000; Brittney Lamb, $1,000; Kimberly Williams, $1,000 Max and Sonoma Creer: Daniel Doty, $500; Craig Sorensen, $500 Kiplyn Davis: Sierra Leifson, $1,000; Paige Anderson, $700; Robert Ogden, $700 B. Davis Evans Drama: Brandon Roach, $900 Bob Evans Band and Orchestra: Anna Harb, $500 Elmo Keck Choir: Brandon Roach, $400 Jack Leifson Civic Involvement: Rebecca Tanner, $800 Bonnie Roach: Alina Haycock, $600 SF Class of 1957: Ashley James, $1,000; Robert Ogden, $1,000; Andrea Jeppsen, $1,000 SF Running Club: Alberto Arreola, $500 Nursing Scholarship: Steffani Minson, $500; Emily Kimball, $500 Connie Chappie Swain Community Service: Andrea Jeppsen, $750 "Live wElle": Steffani Minson, $500 Not only does the Nebo Education Foundation help with non-profit funding of scholarships, but it also raises money to assist in classrooms through the district. Monies are given to teachers and classrooms that have gone through a grant application process. Foundation president Natalie Clyde said, "It is a pleasure to receive the grant applications and see how remarkable and creative the Nebo District teachers are. The Nebo Education Foundation facilitates these grant monies to help teachers realize their ideas and the students' potential. As a foundation, we get to see a glimpse at how well our teachers are instructing our students. Our teachers are truly talented and utilize every penny. They do such a great job." People can specify a specific school or classroom they wish their donation to go to. The extra help through additional funding for non-consumable items give Nebo students the advantage of enhanced learning. The foundation has funded such worthwhile projects as musical instruments and music, books, math and science equipment, computer software and hardware, exercise equipment and GPS systems. "That's what the foundation is all about — to give our students the best educational opportunities possible whether it's through classroom grants or college scholarships," said Susan Frischknecht board treasurer.
