Show orts SP Covering what matters most WEDNESDAY, JUNE 20, 2007 • B1 Brummett selected in MLB draft Chad Vest STAFF WRITER In this community many boys have had a desire at one time or another to become a Major League baseball player. Each June, players throughout the world anticipate their name being called by a team which will give them a fair shot at that childhood dream. Well, less than two weeks ago, former SF pitching star Tyson Brummett turned his dream into a reality. While several teams had the flame-thrower on their radar, it was the Philadelphia Phillies who struck first. Tyson was taken in the 7th round (out of 50 rounds) as the 233rd overall pick in the 2007 MLB draft. Tyson's early round selection makes him the highest drafted player in the history of Spanish Fork baseball As reported earlier in the year, Brummett excelled for the UCLA Bruins of the powerhouse PAC10 conference. He was offered a scholarship after a successful two-year stint at the Junior College of Central Arizona. Following the draft, I caught up with the right-arm wonder. He had played a huge part in leading the Bruins as far as the Super Regional NCAA baseball tournament. Unfortunately,. UCLA was knocked out by perennial power Cal State Fullerton. During our phone conversation I noticed some familiar sounds like the crack of a bat and the loud pop of a catcher's mitt. I asked him if he was relaxing at a ballgame since he had just finished two finals that afternoon. But Tyson had made his way back to the Jackie Robinson Stadium to do some bullpen work to keep his arm fresh and in top form. After acknowledging his amazing accomplishment, I asked how he felt about this new and exciting opportunity. He said, "I know I've got a lot of support in family and friends back in the community with Spanish Fork and Salem. They're pulling for me and want to see me do well. I've got an opportunity and I'm going to make the most of it. I just want to go out there, make a name for myself and make a name for the community and go as far as lean." So what has made him so successful in a highly competitive conference such as thePAC-10? "I think it has a lot to do with my work ethic, my dedication along with good training and coaching that I've been given out here," Brummett said. "It's a game of failure. You're going to lose, but I've been really focused and concentrated on picking myself up each time whether you win or lose. It's not what happened today, it's what you're going to do tomorrow or how you're going to be better the next day. That's kind of been my mindset for schoolwork, baseball, family and religion." Bruins head coach John Savage shared some thoughts on this huge accomplishment and talked about what Tyson meant to his program. , "It was a pleasure to have Tyson in our program. He was a great competitor, and he brought it every game. He was our Friday and Sunday starter. He worked so hardand he deserves everything he got. He earned all of it. I'm really excited for him being drafted to the Phillies.
