Dust, manure and the heat and glare of the sun in the east bleachers. But to some, the rodeo is more than just a chance to sit back and watch your favorite bull rider — it's a way of life. Kristie Kidman of Spanish Fork was chosen to represent the community at the Fiesta Days Rodeo Queen contest on Wednesday, May 30, at the Spanish Fork Fairgrounds. She, and the other contestants, Jordin Barber, Kandas Parker, Leticia Hoffmann, Chelsea Jepperson, Missy Hone, Elisa Williams and Kenzey Sampson, have spent a lifetime learning the ropes of rodeo and horsemanship. Besides promoting the rodeo, one of Kidman's goals this year is to increase awareness of the rodeo's sponsors. City addresses North Park concerns Heather Campbell STAFF WRITER This is the first in a series of articles covering the issues and developments surrounding North Park. This article represents the city s viewpoint, while a future article will address concerns from a group of citizens who have organized to oppose the city's current plans for North Park. As for the skeptics, Thomas encourages them make sure that the information they are hearing from others is accurate. See CITY • A6 Days this weekend Kathleen Olsen In a phone interview, Mayor Joe Thomas said many residents are under the false impression that North Park is being replaced by commercial businesses. "It's a shame," Thomas said, referring to the misconceptions about the park. According to Thomas, the park is simply being reshaped and will still have, "open trails, and walking space, and will work to accommodate more people, not less. ... People are going to be delighted with North Park, it's going to be a beautiful park." Thomas also says that while some people have expressed concern regarding the specifics on the reshaping of the park, most of the residents he has spoken with are excited about the new development and the added benefits of having something like that here in Spanish Fork. / S/umish J-'ml: AVrr.s- 'B'^^^^m^ mmmmmm^ Narnon Bills / Spanish Fork News SUMMER AFTERNOON: Families enjoy some time in the sun at North Park. The city encourages citizens to look forward to new parks, which are currently in the planning stages. m The annual 'Benjamin Days' (Homecoming) will be held on Friday, June S and Saturday.L). Events will begin with a Picnic in the Park on Friday evening at 6:30 p.m. at the Benjamin Park, followed by a children's patriotic parade around the pathway in the park. Children are invited to decorate their bicycles. tricycles, wagons, etc. and join the parade. (Donations for prizes are needed and should be given ahead of time to Sonia Guy.) Following the parade, a family movie will be shown. Saturday morning will begin bright and early with a flag raising ceremony featuring Sheldon Loveless as the guest speaker. Breakfast will be served for a nominal price with a bake sale also taking place. Following breakfast, a program featuring local talent will be presented. The celebration will conclude with the announcement of Benjamin's 2007 Cilizcn of the Year. Mary Jensen will be present at Benjamin Days lo take orders for the second printing oi~ the excellent Benjamin history she has compiled along with the help of her nephew, Dick Wiseman. All present and former Benjamin residents, families, and friends are invited. Ken and Cecile Peay are chairmen for this year's event. V |
