We are thankful for their services in driving us to and from school, on road trips and for sports and field trips, as well as dealing patiently with students and keeping the buses clean. We know our drivers are trustworthy and we look up to them. Mary McKay said, "As I ride the bus every morning, I'm amazed at how much [the driver] cares about every one of her passengers. If the [students] aren't there in the morning, she'll wait. ... If they are crying, she will try Obnoxious snoring? to make them feel better." Out of the Best Books Lu Ann Staheli Chick lit is genre fiction written for and marketed to young women, especially single, working women in their twenties and thirties who live in fabulous places like London or Manhattan. Bridget Jones' Diary, The Devil Wears Prada and The Princess Diaries have all brought chick lit and it's authors to the forefront of the women's literature world. But for those of us who are perhaps — ahem — a little older, there has been a great need for books that bring our own thoughts and concerns to light. That's where well-established writers like Nora Ephron (/ Fee! Bad About My Neck and Other Thoughts on Being a Woman), Fannie Flagg (Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe) and Lolly Winston (Good Grief), step in to satisfy the more mature female readers. Women like to feel a connection to the characters in a book, whether it be a novel or non-fiction, and we all face the same eventualities of life: getting old. death or loss of those we love, relationships both good and bad, etc. These books do more than allow us a place to commiserate — they give us insight that often allows us to heal. When you visit bookstore or library this coming week, you might look for some titles that fit into the category of chick lit, or you might head toward those books meant for the older woman reader. Some of my favorites include: The Red . Hat Society's Acting Their' Age by Regina Sutherland, Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya . Sisterhoodby Rebecca Wells and The Poisonwood Bible by Barbara Kingsolver. / Feel Bad About My Neck and Other Thoughts on Being a Woman by Nora Ephron (Alfred A. Knopf, 2006). She brought us hit movies like Silkwood, When Harry Met Sally, Bewitched, You've Got Mail and Sleepless in Seattle, and now writer Nora Ephron brings women even more they can empathize or commiserate with in this collection of essays about growing old. A mix of wit and wisdom, readers will be asked to look at their own aging process in a whole new way. A broad range of topics — everything from unwanted hair to considering the alternative — makes us take a long hard look at who we are, where we came from and where in the world we are going. This book might be a quick-read, but the messages will stay with you for a long time and probably make you smile.
