Christensen is leaving for Kosovo Namon Bills EDITOR Spanish Fork's Daniel Christensen was deployed on a mission to Kosovo Saturday, Aug. 29. Specialist Christensen will be serving with the 1993rd Contingency Contracting Team, the Utah National Guard's newest unit, which consists of only four soldiers. The team will handle government contract- said they will be equipped to provide "emergency supplies or help the locals get the stuff they need or run their [emergency operations] better." Although Christensen has worked fulltime for the National Guard for three years, this will be his first deployment. ' T m kind of excited just because I haven't done it before," he said. At the same lime, the deployment brings ing in Kosovo over the coming year. "We administer contracts for services or purchases for large items over $2,500," said Christensen. They will work with local contractors as well as foreign entities shipping items to Kosovo. Another function of the 1993rd will be to assist local first responders in case of an emergency or natural disaster. Christensen mixed emotions because Christensen will be separated from his family for a year. He and his wife, Rebecca, just adopted their first child, one-month-old Alexander. "I'm excited about the mission, just not happy about missing time with my family," Christensen said. He and the other members of the 1993rd will be based at Fort Benning, Ga. for training before traveling to Kosovo in the fall. He served as a councilman for eight years while he resided out in Roosevelt. While there in office he was able to learn about how city governments function, work budgets and find funding for projects. He also feels he has the experience and insight to help Salem grow in the direction that will be best for the community. Furthermore Rees says that he knows that Salem is growing and will continue to grow. Rees is quick to note that even though he has experience there is still a lot to learn, but much that he feels he can contribute with his past experience. |
