Wolsey STAFF W R I T E R Cosmetology students at Mountainland Applied-Technical College (MATC) participated in a Mannikin Fantasy contest on Friday, Aug. 28, 2009. Students were given a week to create their entries. Categories for judging included creativity, color placement, imagination, make-up artistry, embellishments and all-over design. Judges had a hard time judging the 50 entries from students. While all students started with the same basic head, each student interpreted the challenge differently. Entries ranged from elegant princesses to punk rockers and even animals. Lauren Smith entered a Mother Nature head that included a dead praying mantis as an embellishment, and won the Most Creative award. MATC Instructor Sue Remkiss headed up the competition. "At first they wouldn't know what to do, but then you'd see the light bulb go off when they'd get an idea and they'd just run with it," Remkiss said. "It was fun to see how creative they got." Hayley Leubain won Best Overall for her Queen Bee head, which entailed a beehive hairdo embellished with bees. Leubain actually made some of the bees out of candy after failing to find the right size in stores. First place went to Aubrey Sorenson for her Decade Doll, featuring different hairstyles over the last few decades, including finger waves and an afro. Melissa Orton took second place with her Medusa doll that not only had snakes but hundreds of braids. Third place went to Lacy Long for her Enchanted doll. MATC offers full salon services including colors, cuts, perms, hair extensions, and much more. They are located at 1200 Del Monte Road, Spanish Fork and can be reached at 801-492-2968. From WIND FEST • A l canoes filled the reservoir. Friday night featured a Hawaiian Luau on the beach. One of the most popular attractions at Wind Fest was the children's tent where volunteers helped children assemble kites. There was also a special area reserved just for the kids to attempt to fly their kites; unfortunately, the wind didn't always cooperate. "They should call this Sun Fest," joked long-term Spanish Fork resident Shirl Brimhall, who came to the event with his granddaughter. Attendees were also given the opportunity to not only learn about wind power and other times of green energy, but were able to try out actual products like Segways, Trikes, and scooters. "Everything is there for interaction," said Elaine Hansen. Special Projects Coordinator for Spanish Fork City. '"You aren't just walking around getting a pamphlet with information."
