SHHS Faculty members meet the Marines The last week in February was not business as usual for Counselor Annie Esplin and Workbased Learning Coordinator Christine Thomas. Instead of reporting for duty at Salem Hills High School that week, they hopped on a plane to1" San Diego and headed for the Marine's boot camp with eighty other educators from Utah, Idaho and Washington. Once there, they were ordered off the bus by their new drill sergeant and told to stand in the famous yellow footprints. Sergeant Bowers next instructions were to quickly move into the building where new recruits empty their pockets of everything save an identity card and religious material. Yes. that's right, no ipods, cell phones or snacks; recruits aren't allowed to keep any of that. Over the next four days, Esplin and Thomas learned what was in store for these new recruits during their next twelve weeks. Among the activities the educators took part in that week were fighting lessons, rifle and pistol simulators, an obstacle course, amphibious tank demonstration, exploration of helicopters, tanks and planes, a look through the war museum and a tour of Mirimar (remember Top Gun!) and Camp Pendleton. They were able to ask a panel of Marines questions after three different tours, and had the opportunity to eat lunch with recruits three times that week and ask them many questions also. Thomas and Esplin both agree that watching the recruits as they came off the 54hour crucible where they ate little food and received little rest was an amazing and emotional experience. This is when recruits are called Marines for the first time and more then one shoulder shook and tear fell from those tough Marines. Singing as Sonny and Cher, the two teachers delighted the almost filled to capacity auditorium. Steven Russell sang some crazy high vocals as a pink haired girl in his group with Tyler Gebert and Nathan Adams who sang "Ally & AJ's Potential Break Up Song." The rest of the performances stayed just as random, from Kari Turner, Rachel Simons, Lindsay Stevens and Andrea Lundquist with the "Bohemian Rhapsody" by Queen to Brent Frank and Boyce Weber dressed as ping pong nerds singing and dancing in their own "way to Enrique Iglesias. Am- Salem Hills mon Love shook things up when his group of Dalian Ficklin and Nathan Christensen and Dallas Anderson sang to Jack Black's "Tribute" and he appeared as an alien with horns and a red loin cloth. But the teachers weren't going lo let the students have all the attention. Ms Hunt, Hunter, Clarke, Reynolds, and Maughn dressed in their old high school clothes (lei's hope they didn't re- ally wear those) and did a mix of six different songs. The night continued to be a success with performances from Dance Company, Guns and Roses, "Hercules" and "Cascada." Originally planned as a fund raiser for the baseball team, the Lip Sync Extravaganza proved to J>e a success for them, as there was almost a full house and the performances were to match in excitement. |
