The song, 'For Good* by Stephen Schwartz was sung so beautifully by Shelly Randolph and Kathleen Anderson. We are proud to be members of the Sisterhood in the Gospel of Jesus Christ here in Spanish Fork. Plowing the furrows There and Back Again Shirlenc R. Ottesen Your chuckle for the week: Lady: "Doc, I am thinking of buying this horse and I want your opinion before finalizing the deal. Will I be able to race him?" Vet: "Sure, and you will probably win." ,So, when you tried to *' use your telephone last . week, how many times did _ you hear, "Your call cannot be completed as dialed?". It . took a few times before I remembered that "Oh, I need to dial all ten numbers!" I ''• almost felt like I was mak. ing an international call instead of to my neighbor just • down the road Oh, well. I - guess we'll just keep ad; justing to new ways of do- ing things that used to be so ordinary. I remember, many years ago, that when we sent a bill to a store in town - say like R. L. Jex Company, all we had to do was put the name of the store and address on the envelope and then write "city" and it got to them just fine! We didn't even have to write the name of the city on it because it was processed and postmarkedrighthere in town. And here we are again on Daylight Savings Time - again! Oh, well, I never did change the clock in my car so it will be right now. This time change really sneaked up on me. I didn't realize it was so quick and early in the month. Some people like it while the ones who don't say, "just leave the clocks alone" You don't realize how many clocks you have in the house until the change comes about. Now it will be darker in the mornings and the evenings will be lighter longer and how that saves time, I just don't know. Just when We thought that maybe winter was over, we had another few days of cold and blustery weather. March usually has a few surprises where weather is concerned. The old saying, "March comes in like a lamb and goes out like a lion" has proved to be true lots of times. Some of the farmers in our area have been doing some spring plowing. When I took lunch to a grandson the other. day, the furrows he made laid so uniform and mere was enough moisture that the dirt was a dark brown. I love the smell of dirt when it is being plowed. I remember my father plowing with a two-bottom plow. That means one furrow up and one furrow back. It took him along time to plow even a small field with a team of horses and a twobottom plow. Being subjected to the weather, he would ride for a while and if it was cold sometimes he would get off and walk to keep warm. It didn't matter whatthe weather was; cold, hot, stormy or windy, the plowing had to be done. It seems that we just got through with the fall harvest and here we are in another planting season. It's time to put out fertilizer and get the sprayer ready. I noticed our chopper in the shop the other day having some maintenance work done on it. When one season goes another one comes. Isn't that great? Madison's Avenue by"BigAlaand''Farnzy" "Look Dad,... IT'S POCAHONTAS!" For your information... Wind blows about Benjamin 'Round and About Benjamin Kathleen Ottesen It is definitely March here in Benjamin with its winds in gusty (and destructive) glory. On one day the wind found a small, unattended fire and quickly turned it into a roaring inferno causing it to jump a drain ditch and spread into pasture land where horses were grazing. Fortunately, it was spotted quickly enough for the horses to be rescued and the Spanish Fork Fire Department arrived and, with a lot of hard work, got the fire knocked down and out. Appreciation is expressed to the Spanish Fork Fire Department plus one unit from Payson for their prompt and effective work. But, the wind was not through yet - the following day it set about rearranging shingles on the roofs of many homes and out building in the t community. Then, it blew open gates that were supposed to be shut and blew shut gates that were supposed to be open causing animals to wander where they weren't supposed to be. Today, as I am writing this, the wind is starting to blow again, never minding that it snowed last night many hope it stays a little breeze and not something that wreaks more havoc. As we said before, March is definitely here! ••• A belated congratulations to Kevin and Laura Burr Beckstrom who were married on • Valentines Day, Feb. 14, 2009. A family gathering honored the couple. Kevin is the son of LaRue and the late Merrill Beckstrom. ••• Our sympathy is extended to John Hal and Marie Johnson and Joyce Johnson on the death of their brother and brotherin-law and former Benjamin resident, Joel Mack Johnson. He was born and raised in Benjamin, served an LDS mission, spent three years in the Navy during World War II, graduated from BYU in chemistry and received his Masters degree in Education and Counseling from the University of Texas. He taught school for thirty seven years and was acknowledged as an excellent teacher. He served in many positions in the LDS church including a second mission with his wife. He and his wife, Jane, had seven children and lived in Payson. They returned often to Benjamin for various occasions and were always warmly greeted as good friends (which they are). Funeral services for Joel Mac were held on Saturday, March 7, in Payson, and burial was in the Benjamin Cemetery. ••• Our sympathy is also extended to Lucille and Bert Argyle at the death of Lucille's sister, Janet Abbott Nelson, of Spanish Fork. She died on March 2, 2009. Her funeral was held on Friday, March 6, in Spanish Fork with burial in the Spanish Fork Cemetery. ••• A reminder of the two Benjamin wards' Relief Society B irthday Parties coming in the middle of March. Benjamin 2nd Ward will hold its party on Tuesday, March 17, to which Relief Society sisters and Young Women are invited. Plans have been made for a lovely evening. The following evening, Wednesday, March 18, First Ward Relief Society sisters and their guests are invited to meet at 6:30 p.m. for supper and a program. Nice, casual dress is suggested. These events are always special and are looked forward to every year.. ••• Happy St. Patrick's Day (and remember to wear green!)
