"It's big," said coach Jimmy DeGraffenreid, commenting on what the victory means for the first-year school. "It's big to get into the state tournament, you know, into the final eight. . . hopefully we can go in and get a couple (of) wins there and get a good strong tradition going." The key player in the victory was 6'4" center Riley Hanks, who contributed 27 points and 12 rebounds. Also key for the Skyhawks was guard Dustin Belliston, who nearly achieved a double-double himself with 10 points and 9 assists. The game started off well enough for the Skyhawks. At the end of the first quarter they held a 14-6 lead, and it looked like they might be on their way to a blowout victory. But Uintah came on strong in the second quarter, scoring six unanswered points to begin the period, and keeping it interesting the rest of the game with a cat-and-mouse effort in which Salem never led by more than 10 points. After the first-quarter break, the Utes closed to within two 10 times, bift only took the lead once, pulling ahead by one point early in the third quarter only to fall behind again moments later on a Salem layup. Midway through the . fourth quarter, Salem leading 49-44, Salem guard Seth Muhlstein "broke the game wide open," in the words of coach DeGraffenreid, with a step-back three that put Salem up by 8, an advantage they hadn't enjoyed since the beginning of the second quarter. They later extended that lead to 10, and it looked as though Salem now had commanding control of a game that they'd struggled to take control of since the first quarter break. But Uintah did not relent. Two foul shots and a layup put them within six, 56-50, with about a minute-and-ahalf remaining. Then Uintah 's Caleb Nelson made a steal and nailed a fast break jumper to put the Utes within four. Cramer coached track at Spanish Fork High school last year and has coached basketball here the last two years. Jackson is in his fifth year as an assistant track coach at Spanish Fork High School, and also has worked coaching the offensive line for the football team. Both did track in high school, and Jackson was a state discuss champion. Coaching is a first for both Memmett and Nelson, though coach Nelson is in her third year as a teacher. Of the four new coaches, Spanish Fork High School athletic director Doug Snell says "we're so excited to have (them). They're going to do a fantastic job." Snell classifies them as "people friendly," "young and athletic," and "outstanding educators and coaches."
