Show -NEWS- Spanish Fork Covering what matters most WEDNESDAY, JULY 9, 2008 • A l l UHSAA realignment: From PLANS • A8 ljOOO. Since January, AD Steve Downey has been working night and day to build an athletic program from ground zero. He commented on the .realignment and how it will affect his school. "It will certainly be nice to have the reduced travel," he said. "It just made sense to put us all in the same region in 4A. Realignment is a tough thing to do. You can't please everybody and it's an impossible task to do that, but I'm very comfortable with the way it turned out." Downey also explained that the UHSAA committee listens to people's concerns after a draft proposal, but in the end, they try to make a decision which will benefit everyone involved. "It's not aperfect system," he said. "But it helps us with transportation because teams will get there and when you have teams that play each other close together, you usually have pretty big crowds." With rapid growth in southern Utah County, schools such as SF, Payson and Springville have overflowed to the max. The addition of three new schools, will undoubtedly affect the lives of parents and their children. "As far as numbers are concerned it will dramatically affect the whole district," said Nebo District Coordinator of Athletics Everett Kelepolo. "There are athletes in all areas, so you start moving everybody out so it's not as condensed. I think there's a lot of good behind it because now you're giving a lot more kids an opportunity to participate. A lot of kids will come out of the woodworks and you're going to find a lot of good athletes being produced." FIELD SERVICE TECHNICIANS UTC Power is a full-service provider of environmentally advanced power solutions, with immediate openings for qualified Service Technicians in southwest Utah (MinersviJle area). The successful candidate for this position will represent UTC Power while maintaining customer owned UTC Power gcothermal powerplants, including commissioning of products at new site locations, scheduling service visits, reporting results, maintaining product maintenance history, and restocking of spare parts as needed. This position includes a very competitive salary, a company provided vehicle, travel expenses, and a comprehensive, world-class benefit package, and a company matched 401k program. Requirements: 2-5 years relevant electrical/mechanical experience, excellent work ethic, aptitude for troubleshooting/electronics, willingness to travel to remote sites, and good communication skills. The UHSAA has a board of trustees which make the policies and the executive committee then decides how to make it all work. The executive director and board held several draft proposals to coordinate an efficient alignment of regions which would work most effective. Initially, the idea was proposed to have these four south county teams facing off with St. George schools and Uintah in a region like that which was done in the late eighties and early nineties. But in recent months, gas prices have set a new record which helped to make a wise economical decision. St. George schools will remain in the land of Dixie to compete in a region of 4A and 3A schoojs. The UHSAA is in the process of determining how those schools may qualify for state tournament play within an unbalanced region. "A lot of people will blame the executive director of the UHSAA if things go wrong," said Kelepolo. "But the board of trustees has an obligation to try and must meet qualifications in majce it as fair as possible. order to change schools. But That's a tough menu when if a student fails to meet the you're talking about all the requirements then he/she schools in Utah. It's hard to could lose one whole year make that really fair and eq- of athletic eligibility.
