Show i, W w sN E S Spanish Fork Track team Wrestling at Region: runs inside Covering what matters most B2 • WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 13, 2008 From REGION • B l Danielle Jones STAFF WRITER About 50 Spanish Fork High School indoor track and field members have been great competitors in track meets at Weber State and Brigham Young University. Many students join the indoor track and field team because they love the competition, the work, and the fun. "For some strange reason, I love the pain. I like the feeling of knowing you did all you could do, the sweet shoes I get to wear, and what other sport has those sweet short shorts?" said track member Brandon Poulter. The team came in with high expectations and has done a great job of reaching their goals. Through dedication and hard work many of these athletes have reached a state ranking. Natalie Stewart is first in the 55 meter dash 7.42, 60 meter dash 7.81, 200 meter dash 26.45, and the 400 meter dash 56.77. Natalie's twin sister, Nachelle Stewart, is first in the 800 meter run with a time of 2:15.49. The 4 x 1 lap relay team consisting of Leah Walters, Sonja Ponis, Natalie Stewart, and Nachelle Stewart is ranked first at a time of 3:07.31. Liz Meinhart is ranked first in the long jump and Mallory Denning is ranked fifth in the high jump. In the 3200 meter run Kirsten Sly is ranked fifth at 11:49.18. The boys are also doing very well. Jason Anderson is ranked third in the 400 meter dash with the time of 3:52.06. Uili Makai and Sifi Vaitohi are both at the top of the shot put rankings. Chris Norris is ranked fourth in the long jump and is in the top ten for the 60 meter dash. "Congratulation to all of our runners, throwers, and jumpers who represent our school," said Coach David Boyack. The next event for 24 Spanish Fork indoor track and field athletes is the Simplot Games held Feb. 14-16 in Pocatello, Idaho. Braithwaite inducted Tim Braithwaite recently returned home from Cedar City after being inducted into Southern Utah University's Coaching Factory Hall of Fame for 2007. Tim Braithwaite, a 1972 graduate of Southern Utah University, starred as a second baseman on four of legendary coach Cleo Petty's Thunderbird baseball teams. Braithwaite then went on to a stellar career in coaching and athletic administration at Spanish Fork High School. He spent 14 years as the Don head baseball coach, earning eight region championships and a state runner-up trophy as well as serving as an assistant coach in football, golf and basketball. Braithwaite's 17 years as athletic director at Spanish Fork and nine years as an administrator with responsibility for athletics touched the lives of countless students and community members and garnered him acclaim from his peers. In 1991, Braithwaite was selected as the Utah Athletic Director of the Year; and in 1995, he served as president of the Utah Interscholastic Athletic Administrator's Association (UIAAA). His work with the UIAAA won him a national Meritorious Award in 1996. In 2006, he was inducted into the Utah High School Athletic Administrators' Hall of Fame. Braithwaite retired from work in athletics to return to the classroom as a math teacher in 2007 and, he says, to spend time at the golf course. Over his 36 years in high school athletics, Tim Braithwaite has ever distinguished himself as a worthy member of the SUU Coaching Factory Hall of Fame. teti SFHS spring sports tryouts All sports tryouts to be held Feb. 25, 2008, unless stated otherwise. SAM'S PREP OF THE WEEK Rodney Cox Wrestling Senior •135 lbs. Senior Rodney Cox is the son of Jody and Gary Cox of Spanish Fork. Cox has enjoyed success throughout the wrestling season, and if there were any lingering doubts, he crushed them on Friday, Feb. 8 as he pinned all three of his opponents on the way to a region championship. Cox was also named Region 4 Outstanding Wrestler. He's anxious but optimistic about SF's chances at state this weekend. Sponsored by the Oil Change Y 552 N. Main* 798-7877 Thorpe the title in what was clearly a heartbreaking loss for Tom Clark. Senior Dave Sorensen secured his region championship in typical Sorensen style, by turning a takedown into multiple three-point tilts and running up the score against his Lehi opponent before ending it all with a 16—0 technical fall victory. Making it into the finals and coming away with second place finishes for Spanish were Nolan Haycock at 130, Dave Sorensen's younger brother Phil at 160, "Mr. Inspiration" Kade Christensen at 215 and, of course, Tom Clark at 140 pounds. Adding to the Dons point total by finishing third were Matt Anderson at 119, freshmen sensation Glade Johnson at 135, steady Eric Kitchen at 189 and powerful Brock Wilson at 285. The Dons had two kids who made it to the state tournament by finishing a respectable fourth in senior Kyle Sanford at 130 and Mike Stone at 145. Junior Brett Grover lost his bid to travel to state as he lost an appeal due to a referee error in his qualifying match and ended the day taking fifth place at 145 pounds. So the Dons' train continues to roll down the track and can now focus their attention on the 5A finale this coming Wednesday, Thursday and Friday in Orem. Look for the Dons to challenge for a top three finish. They have beaten many of the top-ranked teams in 5A in various tournaments throughout the year, and head to head, are as tough as any team competing. The big question is depth. With only 15 kids making it to the big dance, will that be enough to turn the trick? Perhaps the more important question is will those 15 continue to win the matches they should, and win a few of the ones they should not. If those two elements become reality, expect to see the Dons near the top come Friday night. Region Wrestling results TEAM SCORES Spanish Fork Lehi Am.
