Six hundred and fifty athletes braved the weather to participate in the 4th Annual Salem Spring Triathlon held at Salem Pond on Saturday, May 27.. Overathousand spectators and loved-ones gathered to support the iron men and women as they competed in the. event. The triathlon was* comprised of three legs: an 800 meter swim, a 20 kilometer (12.4 mile) bike, and a 5 kilometer (3.1 mile) run. FISH STORY: Luke Christensen of Salem took first place in the Bass Federation Western Divisional Championship. Salem man top Utah fisherman The Bass Federation Western Divisional Championship was held at Lake Lowell in Caldwell, Idaho May 17-19, 2006. Twelve of the top anglers from Utah competed against eight western states. The twelve representing Utah State team were Rhett Fornof of Park City, Luke Christensen of Salem, Wayne Crowder of Orem, Ted Gardiner of Vernal, Steve Larsen of West Point, Kurt Walters of Grand Junction, George Sommer of West Jordan, Tom Nokes of Riverton, Tyler Swaney of Craig, Scott Harvey of Sandy, Cory Jones of West Valley City, and Thomas Zupfer of Orem. It takes a whole year of hard work and dedication to be one of the best to make the state team. Out of these 12 only two will represent their state in the Bass Federation National Championship next spring. Luke Christensen of Salem took home the first place title from Utah and Ted Gardiner of Vernal came in second. These two anglers will represent Utah in the National Championship. Way to go, guys, and good luck. Susan Cole was named state sofball MVP. Susan was unstoppable at the plate, hitting 810, with 7 RBI. She also had two home runs, which helped lead the Lady Dons to their state title. Congratulations, Susan! Jace Brinkerhoff was named state baseball MVP. Jace went 1219 hitting at State, including a home run and 7 RBI.
