Show -N E W S- Covering what matters most Spanish Fork WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 15, 2008 • B9 Life Flight — everyday heros Lexi Jade Thomas, Ryleigh Ann Olsen and Cassidy Joe Johnson 6TH GRADE Can you imagine being in an accident, getting seriously injured and not making it to a hospital in time? Luckily for us, we have Life Flight to come to the rescue. Life flight is always trying to help others with their needs whether they have been shot or stuck in a canyon. Having Life Flight is a blessing to us because if it weren't for them, thousands of people would die without a second chance. It wasn't too long ago that the Life Flight team was called to find and rescue a hiker who had fallen while he was hiking in Baptist Draw. The hiker broke his leg, was wet and very cold. He had been in the canyon for a couple of days before the team got there. Life Flight had to raise the hiker up through the draw, almost 500 feet in freezing cold weather, and set up a landing area. The hiker made it to the hospital just in time. His story has been told on Discovery Channel's "I Shouldn't Have Survived" television show. Life Flight crew members come home crying sometimes because they didn't make it in time to rescue a little boy or girl — It's a tough job. Behind the scenes we saw what the brave Life Flight crew members do and how hard they work Courtesy photo INSIDE KING AIR: Pictured, left to right, Lexi Jade Thomas, Ryleigh Ann Olsen and Cassidy Johnson get an up-close and personal look inside the cockpit. every day. We interviewed Steve McGee, a pilot, and learned when Steve was 21, he earned his pilots license. Steve has bean flying for about 27 years and he learned how toflyon a Piper Tomahawk. Steve also told us that the fastest aii-plane Life Flight uses travels about 500 mph. The farthest he has had to fly is to Gambol, Alaska. He thinks that jets are the easiest aircraft to drive, and helicopters are the hardest. Well there is Steve McGee for you. Kent Johnson, a local pilot from Spanish Fork said that people come in often to express their appreciation. In fact he said a guy came in and said if he would have 11 a.m-2 p.m. been ten minutes longer getting to the hospital, he would have died. Kent, who is Cassidy Johnson's dad, saved his life. We interviewed a nurse named Pam Moore. Pam Said that the hardest rescue for her was a little girl that had drowned. Pam has been a nurse for about 32 years. She was in the helicopter about ten years ago, but now she makes sure that the nurses know what they are supposed to do and when they need to do it. The last person that we interviewed was LisaThurman. Lisa is the head of dispatch. Dispatch is a very important part of Life Flight. She has been working with life flight for 21 years, and before that she worked in the E.R. The way that they know if someone is hurt or trapped is someone calls them and tells them what has happened and where they are. We should all be thankful for Life Flight and are thankful to have our pilots risk their own lives for ours. Mon.-Fri.
