Mike Nielsen, owner of Mike's One Man Band, doesn't own a classic car himself, but since he started hosting "cruise nights" on the fourth Wednesday of every month this summer, he's hooked. Nielsen hosted a car show at One Man Band Wednesday, July 23. While not an official Fiesta Days event this year, Nielsen plans to revive the Fiesta Days Car Show beginning next year. "The real object is to put interest back in car shows in Spanish Fork," Nielsen said. If the car show on July 23 is any indication, there's plenty of interest. There were almost 40 cars there to start the evening, with 20 more expected before the- night was over. Sponsors from all around town helped with prizes — for both spectators and show participants — included the grand prize, a child's four-wheeler donated by Main Street. Motor Sports. The top three car awards were the People's Choice, sponsored by Big O Tires; Best in Show, sponsored by Rocky's American Car Care Center; and Mike's Choice, sponsored by One Man Band. There was also live music — classic rock to accompany classic cars — provided by the Wheelies, made up of Dallon Smith and Geoff Power. "The real object is to put interest back in car shows in Spanish Fork." - Mike Nielsen While most car shows have an obligatory entrance fee, Nielsen said he's dedicated to keeping things free for participants and spectators alike. 'if I have a car show, it will be free," he said. When he decided to do this car show, Nielsen knew keeping things free would require a lot of sponsorships, so he started looking for support from local businesses. "I hit the streets and people just stepped up to the plate and helped us out with this like you couldn't believe," Nielsen said. In addition to the top prizes, awards were presented for autos in 19 different classes. But beyond the prizes, Nielsen just enjoys mingling with the people who come to car shows. "The camaraderie is really amazing," he said. "It's just a lot of fun." Car show sponsors include: Mike's One Man Band, Main Street Motor Sports, Rocky's American Car Care, Big 0 Tires of Spanish Fork, Dean's Quality Transmissions, Clegg Auto Service, Dickerson Automotive, The Car Guys, Wired Right Auto Electric, Zions Bank, Nunos Market and Mexican Food, The Oil Change, Spanish 8 Theater, Steve Ogden's Flooring Design, Beehive Health Essentials.
