Show N E* W S- A8 • WEDNESDAY, JUNE 6, 2007 Spanish Fork Covering what matters most Fiesta Queen: r From RODEO * A l — plan for it," said Kidman. "Most importantly, you have to have fun and be yourself and show the world who you are." The Fiesta Days Rodeo Queen contest was more than just a pageant where contestants are judged on poise and beauty, or how well they walk a stage. The areas in which they were judged included impromptu speeches, personal interview and horsemanship, including pattern riding and cow cutting, or separating one animal from the herd in a timed event. Mark Haskall, who also judged last year's competition, said he looked not only for control of their horse, but also for control of self. "I want to see how well the girls handled themselves in difficult situations. Are they confident, do they put forth their personality? Are they honest, are they being their best? Is there energy in what they're doing?" That criteria applied for both horsemanship and for the impromptu questions and personal interviews, which ranged from random questions dealing with rodeo and western heritage to a chance lo think on one's feet. "I'm very comfortable in the interview," said Kidman. 'This is the fourth time I've done this, so it was fun. I was excited to see what questions they would ask me." Another judge, GinaOlsen, said, "I look in particular for horsemanship. How well they sit a horse during the reining pattern, specifically at their stops, their spins and their lead changes/' "I was so nervous," Kidman said. "I didn't know how my horse would behave. Let's just say he was not a sweetheart." The Fiesta Day's Queen has responsibilities during the FiestaDayscelebrations, buther influence and responsibilities do not stop there.
