Every day students can find people checking the job listings board that is found at the Placement and Career Planning Cenrer in the Administration Building, hoping th.at they qualify for those jobs that are listed. Many are disappointed though, when they find out that to qualify they must be on a program called work study. The Federal Work Study Program is one that was set up to provide jobs for srudents who need financial aid. Each year the U.S. government provides the school with over $200,000 that is set aside for work study students. For each hour a student works, 75 percent of the money they earn comes straight out of the work study funds, with the other 25 percent coming from the departments they work for. Jack Cannon, director of the Placement and Career Planning Center says, "It helps our both the srudents and the school at the same time because the students a~ being paid 75 percent of the money they earn through the government, while at the same time the school receives the needed help from th students." Those who have received work study awards sent in applications which helped determine whether or not they could receive the award. FJigibility i determined by a formula, and calculated u in the financial need of the srudent to give those who don't have the money a chance to put themselve through school. One of the main problems, however, is that there are more work study students enrolled at SUU than there are jobs. "The work-srudi program is good in that it helps the srudents," says Becky Skelton, a freshman here at SUU, "but is really hard to find any openings at all." There are jobs available all over campus, but by having more department positions than there is money to fund, only a small percentage of students receive those jobs.
